“Very nice view”

It's really nice to hang around the castle, the view is great and atmosphere pleasant. The exposition is average.

“Nice Views of the valley from the Castle Grounds!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

We had a beautiful day here at the Castle. The weather was spectacular and we got there early enough in the morning that we could park at the parking lot closest to the entrance of the town. This town is walking only which makes it so much more charming. We walked into the town and headed towards the Castle which is at the far end. There are shops and restaurants/cafes all throughout the area. Just before you enter the castle, you come across the unusual HR Giger Museum (the graphic artist that did the special effects for Alien and Poltergeist) We did not go inside, but you can get some ideas of his work right outside the museum and in the bar just across the path.

You head a little further up the hill and you come to the entry of the Castle. You can walk around a bit to see some of the views down the valley from the castle walls, but you really need to go inside to get the best views.

We enjoyed the inside of the Castle, but it is not like some of the other highly ornate European castles, so don't expect that when you go in. But you can still get an idea of what it was like to live some 600 years ago as royalty. They have various art exhibits at the Castle that I am not sure if they are permantent or temporary. Some of the rooms are set up as they might have been some 600 years ago or so, such as the dining hall and a bedroom.

The gardens outside are really well maintained but not huge. Again, I am comparing this to some of the other European Castles with many acres of gardens which this was not. You can walk the entire rampart around the castle wall. You enter this from the garden area. Many photo opportunities exist of the castle and the valley below especially on a clear day.

Well worth the visit. Also, you can buy a combined ticket for this Castle and the Gruyeres Cheese Dairy if you are also going there and save a couple of Swiss Francs/Euros.

What you think Switzerland is all about. Gorgeous castle, cute village. Tourists galore, so be forewarned. Fondues everywhere....this is cheese country after all.

“Something out of ordinary....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2012

Even though it was a pretty long-walk between the "cheese-factory" and the castle, but it's worth it~~!! The castle itself seems can film a movie just with it architecture, it's so ancient and yet you don't feel bored~ The view was fantastic too~ The "village" where the castle is located isn't that huge but you will find peace and relaxing over there~

“a movie set”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

We traveled up the hill to Gruyere Castle on a whim and what an enjoyable visit. The town is within the castle walls and it just so picturesque. Lots of unique shops and several great places to eat, and the views are spectacular!
