“Really good fondue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2014

We didn't stay at the hotel, we only ate at their restaurant. And we would definitely recommend it!

The fondue was really good - as a fondue-loving Swiss I already had a lot of different fondues and this one was for sure top league! The raclette was tasty as well, but has a rather unique, distinctive taste; so if it's going to be the only raclette you're going to eat in Switzerland, be at least aware of that. The desserts were simple but delicious. The wine selection is more than sufficient, we recommend the Yvorne with fondue and/or raclette.

Service was fast, friendly and the prices surprisingly okay - you'll definitely get cheaper fondues in some other (less touristic) parts of Switzerland, but regarding the touristic status Gruyere has and the fact that the dishes were "à la discretion" (i.e. all you can eat) I think the prices are more than fair!

If you opt for the "most charming" restaurant in Gruyere you'll be well accommodated in "Le Chalet", but in direct comparison Hotel de Ville has friendlier staff and better food.

Brought some visitors to visit the Greyure region. Stop at the hotel restaurant for coffee around 5pm. Waited 20mins to be served. Cappuccino came cold and without any milk. Lucky no Italians around.

Eventually we had our hybrid Cap changed to normal coffee. Waited another 10 mins. Coffee was normal, the only positive point. I must say the waitress did apologise
after.

We stopped there for lunch on our Chocolate train tour. The lunch is not included in the Chocolate train package. There are many restaurants to choose from in the short walk to the Gruyere castle. We chose the Hotel de Ville and it was a good choice. Service was good and the food was awesome We had the local recommended food like Croute au fromage and Gateau au fromage and for deserts we had the famous meringues with the double creme of Gruyere. Not healthy but irresistibly good! Toilets are clean and prices are in line for Switzerland. All in all a very pleasant and enjoyable lunch. We did not stay in this hotel.

Room Tip: We did not stay in this hotel only had lunch there.

Very comfortable hotel, delicious breakfast, lovely views, right in the centre of village. Very friendly and helpful staff. Coffee and tea are available all day. Very comfortable beds and excellent shower.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the top floor for view of the mountains and the church.

Gruyeres is a bit of an exotic destination. One needs to get there to appreciate its secluded beauty. Yes, it's mostly for tourists, but it is definitely worth a visit. Medieval castle, where you are left to wonder and explore on your own, a few small rustic restaurants, small shops along the cobblestone streets. Mountain views over alpine meadows are truly majestic.

We drove to Gruyeres from Zurich. GPS worked just fine and got us there without too much trouble (we did get off the route once, but got back quickly). We've purchased a $50 Europe Maps on Micro-SD card for Garmin NUVI GPS purchased at Costco and simply inserted the card into the navigator. Worked like a charm and saved us almost $30/day if we had to rent it from Budget Rent-a-Car at Zurich Airport.

All cars must be parked outside Gruyeres at the gate. Parking was free. The walk to the hotel was about 300-400 ft up a steep hill; so we've left our luggage in the car and just took day-packs with us with the stuff we needed.

Hotel de Ville is at the centre of Gruyeres, which is a VERY small place. It is more of a restaurant with a few rooms upstairs. There is no reception desk. We walked into the restaurant and the girl gave us the key to the room. Elevator is very small and getting around with luggage would have been difficult. This is not a place for people with mobility issues.

The main door is closed after 9 pm. You have to use your room key magnet to get in. There is also no staff on duty after the restaurant is closed. So, whatever you need, ask in advance before they leave.

Room was very clean and spacious. The view from the window was magnificent overlooking the mountains. Ask for it if you can.

"King-size bed" we'd reserved was in reality two single beds pulled together. Bedding was nice and clean. Unfortunately, pillows were very thin and uncomfortable. We did not sleep well and there were nobody to ask for more pillows.

Bathroom was very clean but also very small, especially, the shower stall. There could have been a couple more towels, I suppose.

We had fondue for dinner at the Le Chalet de Gruyeres restaurant a few steps from the hotel. This is a must. Excellent dining experience and great food. Make a dinner reservation ahead, it's packed.

Breakfast at the restaurant was served table-side in a small breakfast room. Very nice meal and service. We've learned that we had to pay for one extra breakfast, as only one breakfast was included in the reservation we made through Expedia. We could have argued but we didn't and just paid the bill.

Castle visit was memorable and enjoyable.

DO go and see cheese making at Maison du Gruyeres, which is a 5-min drive from the hotel. Plan to do it on a Sunday at noon, when they also show open-fire cheese making, as it was done in old times. Wonderful and very educational place to visit. And the cheeses are amazing.

We've also visited Cailler Chocolate Factory, which was a complete waste of an afternoon. Waited for almost two hours just to get in in a crowded lobby to see one thousand Nestle commercials, a Disney-like ride and try some free chocolate candy at the end.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with mountain view Ask for a couple of extra pillows when checking in Don't pla...

We had a very nice stay at the hotel. The room was very clean and cosy with view on the village. Both the owner and staff were very helpful and friendly. We had dinner which was well cooked. Also the breakfast was very tasty and big.

I loved the hotel and the view from the window. It was a romantic place and suddenly you were plunked down in another time. Rolling hills, cows, farms, fresh air--so much green for October! The room was large, the bed comfy, the breakfast substantial.

Room Tip: Book early. There are few places to stay in Gruyere. It's a very small village. Also, parking...
