“No better spot to stay if you're visiting Gruyeres”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2012

Yes, the hotel is expensive - our room was €230 a night for three people (we stayed in room #34 which has a king size bed and one small twin).  And yes, the hotel is a little dated - the rooms (and hallways) are dark and could use a little updating. But let's put things in perspective - this is Switzerland where everything is expensive and the hotel is located adjacent to the very touristy (though beautiful) village of Gruyeres where everything costs even more (stores charge up to €3.50 for a Callier chocolate bar which can be purchased at the factory in nearby Broc for €1.75).  The other hotels in Gruyeres charge similar rates for their rooms.

Given this, we were very pleased with our three night stay. The room was comfortable and the bathroom contained all the toiletries you'll ever need.  The breakfast buffet (all items are "cold" but you can hard boil your own eggs) is ample and suited our needs perfectly.  The service was also fantastic.

What we liked about the hotel is that it is outside the village which resulted in a much quieter stay.  There are several outdoor seating areas where you can relax at the end of the day. While the hotel does not have a restaurant they do give you a coupon for 10% off in three restaurants in the village.

Stayed 2 nights. First night we were in family room and asked to be moved to 2 doubles. Carol was very accommodating in sorting this out. The breakfast was good and the people working here freindly.

This is a basic hotel, actually a 2 stars one with 3 stars rate and 4 stars price (195 swiss francs for a basic double room with breakfast for two), on the high level even for swiss standards.

The room is basically decorated but ok, with minibar and safety box. Wardrobe is sufficiently big. Lack of plugs (a plug in a wall far from the working table plus a plug at the bathroom and that's it).

The bed is average, but the pillow is awfull, one of the worst i have suffered.

Too much noise was heard from the corridor as from 7 AM.

The bathroom looks like directly brought from the 70's.

Breakfast buffet consist on some bad croissants, good meringue, some starawberries and other fruits, gruyere cream, 3 types of gruyere caheese, some juices, some cold meats, several types of good bread (but no toaster), boiled eggs, anegg boiling station, good coffee and a few more things. Not bad, but nothing from another planet. The staff was fast and efficient.

No restaurant in the hotel, but you get a voucher offering you 10 percet discount at several restaurants in Gruyeres.

The views were great. A partial view of the castle, the impressive mountains in front and a deers small reserve just under the window.

The hotel free carpark is unsufficient when the hotel is full, meaning that parking can be a problem in week-ends when the lovely city of Gruyeres is crowded.

The receptionist could be more polite.

Dogs are accepted with an extra of 6 francs which is fare.

This hotel can be reccomended If you want to sleep in Gruyeres, and bearing in mind relevanly cheaper prices do not exist and the location, 100 metres away from the centre makes this hotel quieter. However, the pillows quality and the noises from the corridor should be considered.

My wife and I just returned from a two-night stay. The location is outstanding; the breakfast is out of this world; the hotel staff were very helpful. We had a standard room at the end of a hall; it was a bit small but had views of the mountains and a balcony overlooking the valley. The size of the room was not a problem for us. The town of Gruyeres is charming with nice scenery, castle/museums, cheese factories, and restaurants. It is close to other attractions like the chocolate factory in Broc. It is definitely worth a stop and this hotel is a great choice.

You can not approach the main small street of the town with a car.The location of the hotel is perfect,as they have a small private parking which you can park and walk 2 minutes to the main street. It's quiet, reasonably priced relatively to Switzerland, nice view of the mountains.
The rooms are very small and the bathroom outdated. They have an elevator and free internet connection. The breakfast is nice and basic, nothing special.
The view though from the breakfast room is very nice.
The staff friendly.

The hotel is located just outside the pedestrian only medieval village/castle and is at the top of a series of public car parks, which get full very quickly. The hotel does have its own carpark, but we found it was difficult to navigate around the small off road with a BMW 5 series, as other tourists seemed to leave their cars blocking the entrance. This was not the hotels fault, and parking was free and very safe in the large car park below the hotel. We left our car there for the duration of our stay and never had severe parking issues.
The main purpose of our visit was for the HR Giger museum and bar, which didnt disappoint, and it was a mere 10 minute walk from the room to the Giger bar. The local beer is called Cardinal, and I saw the bottom of alot of pint glasses while there.
The room itself was very clean, and furnished in typical Swiss chalet style, plenty of wooden furniture with a modern wood floor. Nice sized flatscreen TV,fridge, safe, and a spotless bathroom with great fluffy towels. We did find the bed hard though, and would have liked a softer mattress. This was the only issue we had with the room.
The breakfast was great, with cheeses, breads, yogurts, meats, juices, fruits and coffee or tea, with the famous meringues with double cream, which I never got bored of. There is something for everyone.
Staff were very pleasant, with a personal tour of the map of the village on entry with shop recommendations and a discount for one of the villages restaurants as we were staying in the hotel.
The views and scenery in the whole area are to die for, and you are guaranteed an amazing view no matter what time of year you visit,
We walked down the hill to the cheese factory and had a tour round which is recommended to fans of the yellow stuff! Word of warning, in Gruyeres, there is very little to eat other than bread , wine and cheese, which we loved for the first day, but I could have destroyed a burger or a steak on the second day. Its also great that theres a lack of fast food restaurants, as it encourages you to try the local traditional foods... hope you like fondue! We drove to a local supermarket in nearby Broc on the sunday, but most non tourist shops are closed, so be prepare for a cheese/bread/meringue and cream overload. Dont forget the red wine!
We also did the Callier chocolate museum in Broc , which for me, was the second highlight of the trip. This is a definite must see.
Weather wise, expect a mixed bag. Its the only place outside of Glasgow where I have experienced, snow, rain and sun all within 6 hours. Pack some waterproofs!

A very relaxing trip and the hotel made the stay complete. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a close location to Gruyeres!

.

Room Tip: Choose a room to the rear facing the valley for a nice view and quieter room.

Even though it is a winter wonderland, much of Gruyeres is quite during the winter. That was what we found we when first tried to make reservations. It worked out to our advantage because we couldn't have found a better place. From our balcony we had a clear view of the town including the church and the castle. The staff was helpful and kind, the room was clean and comfortable, the location was ideal, the breakfasts were amazing, and the view was unbelievable! I loved this little hotel and can't wait to come back in the future!
