“flies on the breakfast buffet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

I have been a lot to this hotel because both the location as the nature *buikld in a ancient city gate) is quite special. The room (the Turner suite) was fine and the availability of a fridger was quite useful. Next morning(s) during breakfast things were okay unitl I noticed that the breakfast food cheese sausages etc were placed with out any cover on the breakfast table with flies walking over the cheese etc. This was really putting. A bit more attention for food hygiene would be in place.

I wanted to check a box between average and very good. The hotel itself is lovely -- in that creeky old, built in 1332 way -- but no, it doesn't offer AC (but it does have windows and a lovely breeze off the Moselle), and it doesn't have an elevator, but the stairs wind and divert and your walk to your room, though long, is incredibly interesting. It is not a spa or a fancy place at all -- but it is thick with character. I loved the location -- right in the middle of activity both in the windy streets and along the river with its many winestubes and cafes. Breakfast was simple -- but we eat light for breakfast so it didn't matter. The bottom line -- you get a lot of character, comfy beds with luscious comforters and pillows, for a not-bad-at-all price. I'd recommend this place anytime.

Situated in the middle of the town and built in 1332, the (family run) hotel has lots of character in itself and in its public rooms. However, it has a multitude of stairs to be climbed and our room was clean but small.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and breakfast was plentiful and well prepared.
Dinner was also well prepared, but somewhat overly-complicated and more expensive than other restaurants in the area. There was a good choice of local wines, but the bar and restaurant did close rather early.
The main downside was the lack of air-conditioning and the presence of local night-life. This caused much broken sleep for us during the stay.

Room Tip: avoid rooms over-looking the road

We travelled to Cochem by rail and the location of this hotel was just perfect. It was an easy 10 minute stroll from the station with packs on our backs and was really easy to find.

We had a Double Room Category C and were checked in immediately with very friendly service. We were given lots of information about Cochem upon check in and told were all the facilities were, including the breakfast room/restaurant. Our room price included breakfast but we can't report on it as we ate out and about during our stay.

The hotel facilities were very clean and tidy especially given the historical age of the hotel We were really surprised with the standard of our room - we were expecting it to be much worse after reading negative reviews here but we were very pleased. The room was really large and had a huge bed, as well as a spare single, large wardrobe, desk, mini friedge (unusual in guesthouses in Europe) and a good sized bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

The bed was so very comfortable and we didn't have much trouble with noise - Our window opened onto Bruckenstrasse and I could hear a little of a nightclub on the first night but had no problems going to sleep with the window shut, and it was dead quiet on the second night.

We found this hotel extremely charming and perfectly located. We were without a car and loved being an easy stroll to the old town, across the bridge, to the chairlift, castle and to the train station - we hired bikes and caught the train to Bullay then rode along the gorgeous Moselle.

We would absolutely stay again.

Charming from the outside. Room was 'B' category (B for bad?). Some antique furniture but certainly not worth 115 EUR per night. We had a look at the evening menu and decided to eat there - bad (and expensive) mistake. Fish & duck both overcooked & under-seasoned. Meal for both approx 72 EUR - was worth about 40 EUR (max.) for 2. Thus final bill for one night was 191 EUR (half board & parking). I would not recommend this hotel. We stayed a second night in Trier & if doing this again I would stay 2 nights in Trier & take a day-trip to the Cochem region (v. nice region & visit to Burg Eltz). We chose Römischer Kaiser in Trier - worked out cheaper & much superior both for accommodation & food.

No A/C, same in all old buildings in Cochem but this is located right in the streets. Between the train and tourist area... Pretty much impossible to sleep.

Breakfast was horrible.

There must be better hotels in Cochem.
