My first time to the area, and this hotel was a very interesting part of our stay. We had a river view room which was lovely. We sat out on the balcony in the evenings and just enjoyed the view of the Berg Landshut and Bernkastel across the bridge. We did not have much street noise at all, which was very nice. Note that there is no A/C in the rooms, but because of the location of the town, there is not much afternoon sun, so the hotel was comfortable all day. The bed was typical, two twins pushed together, older but still fairly firm. Mine had a slight sag to it. The room was a nice size but no where to put our bags, so we used the arm chairs that were in the room instead. The furnishings were old and definitely could have been replaced since they were not period design. The hotel is old, we saw pictures of it documenting its history, even through WW2 when the bridge was taken out. The worn, sagging pressboard closet could easily be replaced with something more appropriate. The bathroom was decent sized with a full bathtub and shower. Water pressure was good, towels were okay, everything clean, but it was obvious that a light fixture had been removed (holes in the ceiling, etc). Floors creaked and we could hear our neighbors showering or flushing as the water ran thru our bathroom. We were assigned to room 9 which was right outside of the breakfast area. Not the best place if you want to sleep in, but most guests were considerate and quiet in the morning. The location is perfect. Shops all around, the bridge takes you less than 5 min walk into downtown Bernkastel, or to a boat that will take you for a 1 hr trip up/down the Mosel. Breakfast was typically European with cereal, yogurt, meats, cheeses, tomatos, eggs (deviled, boiled or scrambled), breads/toasts, juices, coffee. Parking is around back, there are only a few stalls available, so perhaps it is first come, first served. There is a requirement to walk up stairs, at least to a lobby level before there is an ancient elevator. Enter the elevator at your own risk, and only when reception is open! The hotel is old and I think should be refurbished to be more in tune with the period in which is was built. The marble stairs and modern paintings are unusual interior decorating choices for this lovely old hotel. I would stay here again, tho just for the convenience, and the view.
