I wanted to attend BUGA, the Germany National Flower and Garden show in Koblenz, Germany. I could find no vacancies at decent hotels in Koblenz and not wanting to rent a car, looked at the Germany train lines to find a nearby and accessible city and hotel. Boppard was the closest (shortest train trip) and I was able to choose from several hotels. I chose the Rheinhotel Royal based on the reviews in Trip Advisor, the price, and the photos. It was also within a reasonable distance of the train station. The hotel staff made the trip a joy!
After making all my travel reservations, I realized I would not be arriving in Boppard until 10:30 p.m. I emailed the hotel and let them know to hold my room for late arrival. They promptly responded and stated they would have someone waiting for me; and they did. I checked into my room and crashed for the night. The free in-room internet worked perfectly every day and was so useful.
The airline had lost my luggage and was scheduled to send it on to my hotel as soon as possible. I told the Rheinhotel Royal manager and he kept me informed as to whether it had arrived. When it arrived 3 days later, they took it to my room while I was out, and then confirmed with me the following morning that I had received it.
The hotel does not have a 24 hour reception desk because it is not needed. But for those going out in the evening, your room key comes with an exterior door key. Because I traveled to Koblenz each day, I was always late (after 10:00 p.m.) returning. Often the manager was still there working or assisting with the outdoor restaurant. The outdoor area is wonderful for a morning coffee, afternoon drinks as well as meals. It is literally on the river bank where no more than 20 feet away the boats and ferry dock regularly. For the Winter season, they have an indoor restaurant and bar as well.
Depending on which room you reserve, your room may be small or extremely large. Mine had a double bed, night stand with small lamp, dresser, TV with some English speaking channels, closet and in-suite bathroom. It was very clean and luckily provided some much needed essentials after my luggage was lost. The comb, shampoo, soap was very useful and luckily I did not need the shaving kit. Another guest told me about their room with a king/queen bed with a second bed that could be used as a sofa or bed. Several other guests commented on how clean their rooms were as well. One couple even told me they chose that hotel based on the reviews in Trip Advisor. It is not a fancy luxury hotel since you don't spend much time in your room in this area of Germany. And for the PRICE, it was above and beyond what I had expected. The pictures are right on. I did not have access to a private balcony from my room, but some of the larger room do. I did discover that if I opened my window in the evenings, I did hear the trains across the river passing in the night, but since Germany trains are traveling at 150 to 300 MPH, it is not heard for long. With the window closed, I heard no trains at all. The hotel does not have Air Conditioning, so be aware you may want to keep the window open. Box fans would be a great addition for the warmer months for us Americans that are use to having air conditioning.
The Complementary breakfast was very European. It offered fried eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon slices and sausage links, coffee, espresso, teas, two fruit juices, yogurts, sliced meats and cheeses, dry cereals and milk, and large assortment of fresh breads and bagels. The staff keeps it well replenished during the meal. The tables in the breakfast room are set up to allow you to sit alone or with others at long tables, while viewing the river. I met several very nice couples. One couple from England shared with me their escapades around the area, touring the castles, taking cruises on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers, visiting the vineyards near Boppard, attending wine tastings and hiking in the woods near by. Boppard has many nice restaurants overlooking the river. One was a light meal but mostly HEAVENLY desserts, coffees and after dinner drinks that overlooks the river, is open late and just 1 block north of the Royal.
For my travel to Koblenz to BUGA, I had a 5-7 minute walk to the train station. Tickets can be purchased for a single trip or for a week's pass. The travel time from my hotel to the BUGA entrance was approximately 45 minutes, depending on the free BUGA bus I caught at the Koblenz Central train station.
The Rheinhotel Royal Lillie's manager speaks English very well and was very helpful in directing me to stores where I could shop for replacement clothing, waiting for me the first night, and just be business friendly. The staff was always friendly, even if they couldn't speak English. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the area. For location, price, comfort, cleanliness and access to all the cultural and reconcreational activities, this hotel can't be beat!
