“My favourite in Germany”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2011

I stay at Hotel Stadt Hameln one or twice a year, for business. There's nothing better you may have from an Hotel and its personnel. The restaurant offers delicious plates at the right price and waiters and waitress are the kindness personified. Each time they give me a different room from a different block (the Hotel consists of four different buildings, sharing the same courtyard); some were bigger than others but always comfortable. Whatever you ask, they give you a reply in five minutes. Everything's clean and tidy and you feel home. My favourite in Gemany together with Bergstrom Hotel, in Luneburg.

Ring Hotels in our experience tend to offer good quality accommodation and good meals. This one doesn't.

First impressions - and those of the website are favourable - impressive in fact. I guess that's always a problem with photographs and websites. The reality is a really impressive set of buildings in quite a good location right on the Weser River (of Pied Piper fame) with very easy access to the town centre. Parking though is in a "town" car park with access to the hotel through a locked door and some very steep steps - there appears to be no disabled access as the (grubby) lift to reception is beyond the stairs.

Once in the main reception area you are aware of a slightly down at heel aura - the carpets - from another time and place - would feel the wrath of the House Doctor's tongue!! They are even worse in other parts of the hotel - and our bedroom's carpets were stained and bleached through endless attempts to clean them.

The bathroom had been refurbished - but the remainder of what could be an impressive room (described as Romantic) was sorely in need of some love and care. I was impressed by the ball of hair etc that lurked by the radiator pipe!! And the windows really needed a thorough clean - it appeared that a grubby child had managed to install equally grubby handprints everywhere.

Bed linen and towels etc were of very good quality and the bed was comfortable ... but the room - to be really blunt - was hardly worth 50% of what we paid ... Dinner was an experience all to itself - there was a wedding party installed - and probably a SAGA holiday party there too - so little attention was paid to us. The staff were running round like headless chickens and our meagre schnitzel and strange salad took us almost two hours to order and eat. Much better quality, service and value in the local McDonalds. We were particularly impressed by the woman dispensing drinks who, at one point, over filled a carafe of wine from a bottle and hastily restored some of the spilt wine to the bottle.

Two things spring to mind (we are both professional people well versed in leading and managing teams). One, the very impressive buildings are outstripping the owners ability to maintain high standards (the carpets are ample evidence) and two, there is a serious lack of management ability. We watched one waitress walk empty handed to and from the wedding buffet over 70 times during our “meal” in a successful attempt to escape serious work … others were equally unfocussed and the customers suffered.

Overall an experience not to be repeated … Four star – not likely.

We liked the look of this riverside hotel on passing it on the way into Hameln. The only rooms left on a Saturday evening were on the fourth floor and the receptionist told me that he would rather have given us a room on the next floor down. This turned out to be because
the room was under the sloping roof and nearly half of it was pretty much unusable for this reason. All the usual hotel furniture was there, but it was impossible to sit at the coffee table without bending my head because of the low ceiling!

Having said this, the hotel is otherwise of very good quality and we had a lovely river view. The breakfast buffet and service were excellent.

  • Liked — Imposing building, convenient parking, breakfast, view
  • Disliked — that sloping ceiling - I wouldn't stay there again if I had to have a 4th-floor room
