What do the Romanovs and Elvis Presley have in common: Bad Nauheim. I had wanted to stay at Dolce Bad Nauheim but it was booked out by a conference. This was my second choice, courtesy of Trip Advisor. We stayed for a couple of nights and found it to be a pleasant experience.
Hotel Spoettel is in easy walking distance of the station. It is located in one of the grand, early C20 mansions that dominate the town. On the plus side it is run by a family who are very helpful. It is very clean and of a good standard. We had Rm 303 which was a bedroom and a separate lounge room with a little bar fridge and a tiny balcony with a lovely roof top view. Bad Nauheim was COLD and this hotel is warm and it offers a large, downstairs lounge.
On the negative side the hotel only looks grand on the outside. Inside it is without most of its original features: it's mainly artex walls and 1970s refurb. The TV has a lot of cable stations but there wasn't one in English. No tea making facilities as per most European hotels but there is no after hours cafe or shop nearby. I was furious that our room had a broken blind (the building has external metal roller blind) and so light poured into our room from 5.30am. This seemed unnecessary as the hotel was almost empty when we stayed there. However, later that morning, sitting downstairs in the pretty basement with a delightful breakfast with everything (eggs, pastries, fruit, milk) fresh, drinking a good strong cup of coffee while listening to the King sing in the background I thought that it was a pretty nice place.
Bad Nauheim is a spa town, located a quick train trip from Frankfurt. It is a small, beautifully designed town, famous for the amazing spa which was created by the brother of the last Tsarina. It is also where Elvis Presley did his military service in Germany in the 50s. The town is also notable for its grand architecture, health treatments and nice shops and restaurants. The town regularly welcomes Elvis pilgrims.
