Braunfels is an idyllic village north of Frankfurt at the base of a castle crammed with art, armor, medieval furniture and other eye popping artifacts. The hotel is right on the square below the castle but sees very little car traffic so it is very quiet. The rooms are large and airy. The scene from our window was very pastoral and peaceful. The only complaint I have is that the bathtubs were built on platforms in the bathroom to accommodate the drains above the stone floors. This makes it very dangerous to step out of the tub because you can easily slip and fall if you aren't extremely careful. There should be a safety handrail as well as an intermediate step.
Our group had buffet meals. The food was very basic and limited- grocery store quality bakery, bread and cheese. As we had just come from Italy, the drop in the quality of the coffee was steep. The staff handles registration, serving and maid service so they are constantly busy and not available most of the time. We had to check out before 9 so the staff could clean our rooms for the next group.
We had dinner at an excellent Italian place a few doors up. The square is filled with cafe tables where residents quietly chat and read the paper. Definitely unlike any place in the US even though New Braunfels TX sprouted from here.
