My wife and I are on a trip through Europe and we decided to stay here to visit the Castles of Bayern. To be clear this is a review of the Hotel Schwangauer Hof.
The location is a little farther than we intended, it is a 35 minute walk via paved trail to the ticket office of the castles, and there very few restaurants or anything in the vicinity for food and or drink. Also the doors do not open until 3pm so if you are in the area, you cannot check in before this, unless you catch them in the morning. It should be noted as well that as of April 11 there was no available internet there as well, terminal, wired, or otherwise.
I mention this because the staff decided that there were not enough people to warrant serving beer the first night regardless of what it says in the brochures. The second disappointment with the staff was that when we went for a drink the next night thinking hey maybe they would be open tonight as there was a tour bus in the parking lot that looked like it unloaded all of it's passengers into the hotel we were again met with disappointment. We walked in and yes the door was open, but the gentlemen behind the counter said, and I quote "it was only open for the important japanese people because they required food when they arrived, because there is no restaurant here and find food anywhere else" but we couldn't find food either as it was Sunday and everything else was closed... make of that what you will.
For breakfast the next morning they had scrambled eggs out, I thought "hey great, hot food!" but then we were told that it was for the "important tour bus people, but go ahead anyway" to top it off she took it away after I dished up and my wife didn't even have a chance to get any. no word of a lie, this came straight from the waitress at the breakfast room. I do also speak Deutsch and used all proper forms of Sie and never disrespected them in anyway, so we could not understand why we were to be treated like this.
The facilites were great, in fact very clean and overall left a great impression of the hotel itself, we had the swan room with a view of Neuschwanstien in the distance for 75E a night, but because we didn't show up with a group of people we left feeling very disrespected and as such I would not recommend anyone to stay here. Stay somewhere closer to the castles, there's not much else in the region, and that was alot longer of a walk than it looks on paper, or stay directly in Fussen, (this is actually in Horn) as the transportation is better anyway and more places around that will serve better to people without a mode of transportation.
Ask for the swan room with a view of the castle.
