“Lovely Schliersee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2009

In August 2007, our whole family spent two weeks in Bamberg and Schliersee. In Schliersee, we exchanged our timeshare and stayed at the Alpen Club where all the staff are very friendly and helpful. We rented a monster van that accommodated my family of five, and my brother-in-law's family of another 5. It was a manual van so my brother-in-law drove. We went to every little cities/town and sampled their specilalties, at that time, the pfferlingen (mushroom), their organic fresh salad, pig hocks, all in humongous portions. We also had different types and sizes of beer servings, and I ended up liking one that is served warm (a little flame underneath the glass). We went hiking, where the cows grazed by and the sounds of cowbells were like music. After a couple of hours of hiking up in the mountain was a beer garten, and we had lunch and even took some cat naps lying down the wooden benches and just gazing on to the blue sky above. We were in the different church in each city/town, and I am in awe to look at the beautiful holy statues. It was a most wonderful vacation we had. Next year, will be the Oberammergau Passion Play, and my sight is again on beautiful Schliersee....

“Overview of Resort of Schliersee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2008

Schliersee is an absolutely beautiful place. You don't need a car as public transport is very good - you can get a train from the airport to munich and then directly to schliersee. buses are good around the resort too. Once you get off the motorway, you will notice the houses which are gorgeous. No built up areas anywhere in sight!! The lake in Schliersee is huge which you can swim in or get boats out on. We got a pedelo and went to the island although we didn't get on to it, i think there is a hotel on it though?? don't quote me on that though! There seems to be festivals for this that and the other all the time which is great as Bavarians obviously like to have a good time, lots of beer and pretzels! Food can be a little daunting from time to time as a lot of the restuarants don't have english menu's. The waitors/waitresses are usually good at speaking english though and will help you out. We had some lovely meals whilst in Schliersee, one place in particular was Marlene's. Its actually located just outside the main resort on the way to Fischbachua. I think its in Neuhauserstr. Its a pub but food was outstanding. Well worth a visit. If you go to a supermarket then try visiting the larger one just as you enter Fischbachau as this is SO much better than the Plus and Tengelmann in Schliersee. Much more choice and better value we found. Most shops in Schliersee close at lunch time and close at 6pm. I think the supermarkets closed at 8pm. Places to visit if you have a car then go to Neuschwanstein Castle (the chitty chitty bang bang castle!), the drive is fab (from Schliersee about 2 hours). From the car park/village you have to buy your tickets for the castle and then either walk (about 45 mins), take a horse carriage (about £5 return) or bus (?? £?? ) up to the castle. The restuarants here are expensive so if you can wait until you get to the castle, do, as there are a couple of places up the hill which offer cheaper and what looked like better food. On the way or way back, if you have kids there are plenty of summer tobogganing places, near the castle in particular there is a HUGE activity place where you can trampoline, toboggan, chair lifts, paragliding! Another place to visit is Salzburg. Its about 1 hr from Schliersee on the motorway or 2 hrs through the mountains (much nicer drive). If you drive, you will need a hi vis jacket and a special sticker for your car (which you can buy from petrol stations) to go on the austrian motorways! If you don't have one of these stickers you will be fined! Have a fab time - take loads of money as its not cheap but enjoy!

Inside Schliersee: Things to Do

Schliersee is little known to most tourists outside Germany but it is well worth spending some time here. It is a small village and is set very prettily alongside the lake of the same name. The village is surrounded by mountains and whichever direction you look the veiw is stunning. The lake freezes in winter but in summer warms up enough to swim in. The lake is very clean and only allows electric boats or row-boats on. You can sunbathe around the shoreline and there are lots of lovely bars and restaurants to try out the "Weisbier".

Close by in Spitzingsee you can take a cable to the top of the mountain, enjoy a beer or coffee whilst admiring the views and then walk back down to the village. About 3k away is another larger lake called Tagensee which has a few towns and villages around it's shoreline. A boat-bus takes you around the lake where you can get on and off as you choose. There are also great walks around the lakes with plenty of stopping-off places for refreshment. Food and drink are much cheaper than England and standards are very high.

This is really a great place to spend 4 or 5 days and in the wider area there is lots more to do and see.

“wonderful Bavarian Alps town Schliersee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2006

We took a trip last spring to the Bavarian Alps. Our base was the beautiful town of Schliersee, GE. It is situated in the gentle alps just between Munich and Salzburg on the large lake, Schliersee. We flew into Munich and rented a car, arriving in Schliersee in approx one hour. It is an easy drive there, as well as to/from Salzburg, Austria. There is great skiing to be had close by, but we were there just before Easter and the snow was not very good any longer. The mountains were gorgeous, and the town and surrounding areas were just breathtaking. We stayed at the Alpenclub Schliersee. It was very clean, comfortable, and accomodating to us in the apartment-style rooms we stayed in. There was a small kitchenette/dining room that was stocked with dishes and any other things we could need to prepare food on our own. One day we took a walk through town and visited several great shops. Just strolling through town and looking at all the beautifully painted buildings is enough to leave you with many happy memories of the town. I have always been very impressed with European-made goods, and there was much to appreciate here. We also walked around the lake on a very good path, a walk that took about 2 1/2 hours with our children, one in a stroller. There was a great little restaurant just next to the parking area on the lake that served us scrumptious hot chocolate after our walk. We had dinner in the next town, Fischhausen, two times. We loved the Restaurant Sachs, which had two beautiful dining rooms, one more formal and another more of a weinstube/casual dining area. The food was very good quality and the owner was very kind to us and spoke good English. There was also a dining room at our hotel which served excellent meals, of which breakfast was included in our stay.
The hotel also had a spa/pool that was clean and beautiful. There was a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, pool with very powerful jets, and a bathing area. It was all exquisitely kept. It is possible to schedule massages there, though we did not partake. One day we took the Schliersberg Alm, a cablecar up to the top of the mountain beside Schliersee. It was a pleasant afternoon on top, where there is a hotel, a restaurant, a chapel, and an extensive play area for children. The view was incredible! It was a gentle downhill hike of about 20 minutes back into town. We took 3 day trips from Schliersse during our week there. One was to Munich, one was to Salzburg, and one was to Schloss Linderhof, the Pilgrimage Church at Wies, plus Oberammergau. Those locations will be reviewed separately.
