We only stayed two nights at the hotel, but wished we could have had longer. We expected it to be above average from reviews we had read and we were not disappointed. The exterior of the hotel is fairy-tale, and the interior is both quaint and attractive. Our room was very comfortable, charmingly olde worlde, and we loved the fact that it had a large ornate stone pillar through one corner! The bathroom, though not large, was perfectly adequate. The buffet breakfast was good, and more than satisfied our English tastes! The hotel owner was very friendly, and took pride in pointing out to us the photographs of many generations of his family which lined the corridor walls. The staff were helpful, and helped us to get the most out of our brief stay in Meersburg. Being able to put our car into the hotel garage was good, as parking in the town is limited.
All in all, we would unhesitatingly recommend this hotel, and intend to stay there again.

We just returned from a stay in this hotel. The hotel is very charming and clean. The staff are friendly and speak excellent English. The only downside was the lack of air conditioning in 90+ degree weather. A ceiling fan would have been a welcome relief from the heat.
We didn't eat at the hotel except for breakfast, so I can't offer any opinion on the food. The breakfast was a typical continental breakfast. The food was fresh and replenished as people ate.
The hotel website is great. They show pictures of all the rooms and you can book which room you want to stay in.
The town itself is small and fun to explore. Meersburg has the oldest castle in Germany. It was interesting to walk through. Many of the town people do not speak English, so knowing some German is helpful. Overall, if you're looking for relaxation, this is an excellent place to stay.

Tranquil, comfortable and an excellent base for day trips on the Lake, to Zurich and to Austria. Wonderful staff and an exceptional international menu -- so unlike much North German cuisine..
Tip: From the airport at Friedrichshaven take bus 7394/7395 to Meersburg Kirche and the hotel is 100 metres down the hill. Public transport: trains, buses and river ferries are cheap efficient and, unlike the UK, integrated ! -- no need to hire a car.
Great value for money.

I have taken 2 small groups to the Zum Baren and in both instances staying there was the highlight of the trip for everyone. The owner, Michael is an excellent host and chef. The building is of historical significance, so much so that it was on the German 20 mark note for many years. The staff was very accommodating and anxious to make our stay memorable. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
