“Riesen is Germany's Best Kept Secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2009

I've been staying at the Riesen since 1999. This is one of my favorite hotels in all of Germany and in the top ten of my favorite hotels in Europe. Authentic, old, beautifully decorated with plenty of personal charm. The couple who run it are NOT Jewish, as one poster said. What looks like the Star of David hanging from the hotel sign is actually the Brewer's Star and it marks a house given the right to brew beer. This is an ancient symbol and predates the use of the Star to designate the Jewish people. Anyway, a stay at the Riesen is to experience a bit of old-style German hospitality. Fresh bread is served on your table in the morning along with homemade jams and generous portions of cheese, ham, salami, etc. The coffee is excellent. The place is quiet at night, except for rooms which face the street which can be a little loud due to passersby who have had a little too much "fun" out in the many pubs which surround the Riesen. Ask for a room at the back of the hotel and you will sleep like a baby. No TVs or even phones in the rooms, ah, this is relaxation to the max!

We stayed here a Saturday evening in April. According to the hotel it's Germany's oldest "gasthof".

The hotel is fantastic, very old and beautiful building. Being an old building the rooms are smallish, but very well appointed. We guessed that the room had has an interior decorator to do it up. The fabric/weave on one wall and the roof of the four poster bed, was matched with the walls. But the older woman who runs the hotel had added "personal" touches, such as angels, dried and plastic flowers.
The room was very clean, and comfortable.

The restaurant in the bottom of the hotel is run by someone else
http://www.riesen-miltenberg.de, it's absolutely fantastic. Mixed generations, great beer, good food, and lively. We spent our Saturday evening there.

The town itself is in beautiful surroundings, castles, rivers, woods, and not at all far from autobahn.
I strongly recommend a visit.

Please note that we called in advance to book a room, the hotel doesn't have a website, the woman wasn't all that interested in making sure there was a room. She didn't take a name and so on. When we arrived she didn't react when we said we called the night before. However we did get a room, and since it was low season maybe that was her assumption.

  • Liked — The history, the room
  • Disliked — The booking issues.

This old inn is not in Hesse but in the southern portion of Deutschland on the river Main. We spent two nights here back in October 1999 and enjoyed our stay very much. The innkeepers were apparently a charming old Jewish couple. The hotel is on the upper floors (has an elevator) with the tavern on the first floor and is not part of the hotel. This is the old inn that Martin Luther was reported to have spent a night.
