We have just returned from a very pleasant trip to Xanten, staying for three nights at the Hotel van Bebber.

Like most of the other reviewers, we were impressed by the building, its location and its history.
Our room overlooked the pedestrianised Klever Strasse and was both spacious and comfortable. The high ceilings and almost full-length windows added to the room's charm. All the furnishings were tasteful and of good quality, and the bathroom large and bright.

We, too, were surprised to find no restaurant, and although not specifically mentioned on the hotel's website, their picture gallery shows a dining room set for dinner, with wine glasses and lighted candles. Slightly misleading.

As the hotel is so close to the town square, with its many cafes and restaurants, the lack of a restaurant in-house did not pose us any problems. It must however represent a major loss of revenue for the owners, and appears to have been out-of-commission for some time. A bit odd.

Breakfast arrangements were fine for us, with a good selection cold meats, fruit, cereals, bread, rolls, coffee and a large selection of teas and infusions.

On the downside, our room lacked any tea- and coffee-making facilities. Also (as noted by another visitor), it was necessary to ask at reception for a hair-dryer. A room safe was another item we expected to find, but did not.

Parking was easy and convenient (outside the side door from reception) and in general we found the staff pleasant and helpful - their English was certainly vastly superior to our almost non-existent German.

Overall, a lovely town, a basically good hotel, and an excellent holiday!

Room Tip: Worth the upgrade to the Deluxe Room - large and luxurious.

I have stayed at this hotel many times in the last 5 years, on business. The bedrooms are large, comfortable and very clean. Breakfast is typical buffet style with both warm and cold food, well presented and plenty of choice. I tend not to eat in the hotel restaurant, prefering to explore the local village which is only 100m from the hotel. It has a great location for exploring the area. It was really dissapointing when the cellar restaurant closed earlier this year, as their food was very good and cheap, we also miss the bowling that was available in the cellar. Don't let the profusion of dead animals and birds, mounted on the walls put you off!!

We stayed at the Hotel Van Bebber for one night to explore Xanten. The hotel is right in the middle of town and is perfectly located to explore on foot. We even walked to the archeological park which is just outside the town walls.

With some roads blocked off by roadworks at present thereby invalidating the sat nav - driving to the hotel car park was a challenge but we made it in the end!

As others have said this hotel is a one off - rather like stepping into a cross between a swiss chalet and old hunting lodge. Dark wood - wonderful old staircase and hunting trophies on the wall all add up to real quirky character and a wonderful change from the bland formulae of so many modern hotels.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the room on the 2nd floor was spacious, bright and fresh.
The cellar bar was not open but frankly that makes no real difference as the main square with multiple choices of bars and restaurants is literally only steps away! Breakfast was excellent with lots fo choice and good fresh food.
If you love modern box like hotels you probably will not like this place but for a place with character and quirky charm - warmly recommended.

Room Tip: If you visit the town square sit down and try one of the ice cream dishes at the 'Teatro' ic...

Back to the Van Bebber again, stranger and stranger....
Arriving very late on a Sunday evening, my taxi driver already had my room key and I had to open the front door and let myself in !. The reception was in total darkness so I just made my way upstairs and found my room. Next morning, down for breakfast, helped myself and suddenly STAFF ! - "woh, a guest, better welcome him !!".
Don't get me wrong, I have no complaints about the room, bed or breakfast but this place could be much more. I just can't believe that someone doesn't realise that they have this little gem.

First stayed at the Van Bebber in 1994 on business, several times since and most recently at the end of January. Unfortunately this great place is now no more than a German travelodge - room, with breakfast. To be honest I only ever ate in the hotel on two occasions, both times less than enjoyable. The beer keller in the cellar is now closed ( permananetly ? ) and is privately owned and the bar ?.....the end of the reception desk.
Upon check in, I went to pick up my key..."PLEASE WAIT !!" was the receptionists request. "If you are out after 10pm, please take your key for the front door.....". Not entirely welcoming which is a great shame as the Van Bebber is a great whacky hotel in a lovely North German town.

Room Tip: Only ever got what I have been given !

Curiosity brought us to Xanten. It was my grandfather's birthplace. The city made "stepping stones" in front of the people's houses, where the Nazis took them away and murdered them.I wanted to see my grandfather's stepping stone and the house, and to make it an enjoyable break, we stayed in the hotel van Bebber. We were not disappointed. The rooms were lovely. The decor in the hotel is wonderful. The breakfast was excellent. I would like to go there again.
We were disappointed that the restaurant (which is supposedly so good) did not open.
