Proclaimed the longest fort in the world, the Burg is a collection of courtyards built along the crest of Ludwigsberg between the Salzach and the Worhlsee. Great views, the buildings become progressively more imposing (and ancient) as you approach the "first" courtyard with late medieval palace. Great views and all of this free. Admission required for museums on premises, including both local and branch of Bavarian museum dedicated to late Gothic art. When we were there (summer 2012) an impressive Landeaustellung on relations between Bavaria and Austria during medieval period (when Austria was part of Bavaria) and Burghausen was not even a border settlement!
Easy access by Cityline bus (1) from train station, fare included in Bavaria DB ticket (and reduced admission to museums).
