“Nice hotel in sleepy Garmisch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2008

I stayed here for one night in the in-between season, meaning that ski season was over and the summer guests hadn´t really started arriving. This made this lovely town look a bit over sleepy.
It´s not a long walk from the pedestrian streets in the centre of town but a few brisk steps away.
I made use of the spa with my party although we were a bit late and it was about to close. Might be open a bit longer for our taste because we enjoyed the steam bath and warm pool. Where to change clothes was a bit unclear.
We didn´t interact much with the staff except housekeeping which was exceptionally cheerful. An older gentleman in the reception met our youthful spirit with less than enthusiasm.
The rooms were adjacent as we had asked for and we could open a door between them. Both of them were quite spacious and had a fine bathroom. The views from the windows were spectacular.

  • Liked — Spa and sitting room.
  • Disliked — A bit stuffy atmosphere.

Stellar service. Wonderfully clean, clean, clean. Rich in tradition.
Restaurant is excellent.
As the other reviewer noted, US guests may find this hotel borders more on the "mountain lodge" or B&B-like end of spectrum than what we're accustomed to thinking of as "hotels" -- that's Allgäu for you.

I'll be frank, my wife and I prefer top four and five star hotels. But we also demand value and high standards of service and cleanliness. Nowhere, and I am not exaggerating, nowhere have I encountered a more profound sense of service and commitment to one's guests than I did at this hotel. I congratulate and applaud the third generation owner, Maximillian Ortleib and his magnificent staff and their absolute commitment to their guests. This hotel is not elaborate, it is more in the line of a mountain lodge, but it is in the tradition of the very best lodges, ideally located, magnificent scenery from one's room, and my favorite, those freshly pressed cotton comforter covers. Stay here, you will feel like a welcome guest served by peolple who really care.
