“Excellent stay 13th-18th May 2013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2013

Stayed over with Treyn tour to Harz Mountains. Very nice rooms, excellent buffet style hot and cold breakfasts and dinners. Unlike a previous reviewer, found there was a good variety in the menu and staff went to pains to top up regularly if it looked to be running out. Always tasted very fresh and an abundance of smoked salmon as part of breakfast for most days was always welcome! Desserts, however, would be rather disappointing to those who enjoy them. Staff very helpful but agree with a couple of other reviewers that the 'lounge' is rather small and not overly comfortable and the pillows REALLY are too flat but think another reviewer mentioned they got others from the staff without any problem. Rooms are spacious and, as far as we could see, all rooms had balconies and ours overlooked the lake which was lovely. Good local walks and can recommend the cable car up the mountain and the toboggan run! Bus to Goslar, medieval and baroque town with many interesting facets, stops outside the hotel, which Treyn had included as an excursion a previous day. We went again! Lake walk very pretty especially early evening. Pool smallish but good as was sauna.

Room Tip: Those overlooking lake are great, some others overlook the carpark.

We stayed at this hotel with Treyn Holidays. The hotel is a very 1960's concrete box however the rooms were spacious and comfortable. The staff were all extremely friendly and spoke good English. There was an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and wellness centre. The lack of a proper lounge to relax in was poor. There were just a few chairs the rest are cafe type tables and hard chairs. The location is very pretty overlooking the lakes and there are plenty of walks in the area, which was very quiet in mid May. The downside was dinner which was buffet style. There was plenty of salad to fall back on and soup but the main courses and desserts were very poor. The meat dishes were all very similar , pork, beef, veal all in brown sauces and the vegetables were frozen and very soggy. The vegetarian option one night was vegetable lasagne made with the frozen veg and white sauce no tomato in sight. Desserts were dismal, presentation was dreadful large bowls of pink and brown stuff not attractive and I love desserts. I understand that catering for large numbers is a challenge but it could be improved by a more imaginative menu and fresh vegetables and individual desserts.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front have good views of lake but noisy traffic. The back is very quiet but no view.

We stayed at this Hotel for one week as part of an organised tour to the Harz Mountains. It was lovely, quiet and friendly and we wouldn't hesitate to use it again if we travel independently to the area. The restaurant offers very hearty food at breakfast and dinner and it does a special children's buffet which was very popular with the families staying while we were there. It is on the main road but Hahnenklee is quite a small town so there was no traffic noise. We had a room with a balcony at the front of the hotel, overlooking the park and lakes. While we were there, the weather was cold and the lakes were frozen but I imagine it would be lovely to sit out in the summer. The hotel is 2 minutes from the cable car up the Bocksberg, where you can ski and sledge in the winter or walk in the summer. There is also a toboggan run which is open all the year round. There is a regular bus into Goslar which stops right outside the hotel. It takes you down to the train station from where you can travel to many other places in the area such as Wernigerode and then on the narrow gauge railway up the Brocken. This area has a lot to offer for young and old alike and we would definitely recommend this hotel if you chose to go there.

Whilst in Germany for CeBit 2013, instead of staying in Hanover we stayed about an hour away at this hotel. There were about 10 of us all together and noone had any issues with the rooms or the hotel. Friendly staff who mostly spoke English, spacious rooms, comfortable beds, no noise and the breakfast each day was hot and plentiful.
We stayed at the end of winter, and the lake was still frozen and very picturesque, especially at sunset. Snow was still on the trees as well. A very comfortable stay.

We stayed over the Christmas period with Treyn Holidays. The hotel is set in a very picturesque location, with great views over the lake and set within the mountains. On a clear day, especially after snow, the views are breathtaking with amble walking for all levels and even a Ski slope. Although we traveled on a coach tour, there seemed to be good public transport links (even over Christmas period) and local amenities (local supermarket, pharmacy, pubs, restaurants). You tend to exhaust the attractions in the locality after a day or two, but there is plenty to do if you travel out to Goslar, Wernigerode, Quedlinburg or take a trip on the Selketalbahn or Borcken railway.

The hotel provided us with a buffet lunch and breakfast each day. The quality of of the food was excellent with meats such as Wild Bore and Venison. However, the high number of people seemed to bring down the quality of atmosphere and menu imagination. It did seem that the hotel had preferred quantity to quality. Christmas dinner was also very basic, but I appreciate my perception of Christmas dinner is different to that of the hotel's region.

I wish I had taken previous reviewers comments regarding the pillows more seriously, the pillows were indeed a big issue. Everyone on our tour requested more pillows, and I needed three to become comfortable. I was shocked that the hotel had seemed to ignored the problem, despite many comments on trip advisor and direct feedback. I also did not received any correspondence regarding my completed feedback form.

Upon my first morning I awoke to the sound of dripping, I thought this was the heating, I was horrified to find it was a leak. Two out of three parities I was travelling with had leaks within their rooms. It appeared to be patched up with a towel each day. There was a slight language barrier between us and the staff, but our tour guide was able to translate the problem and in the hotels defence we were changed to new rooms.

The rooms and ensuite were generally of a good standard, large in size with a good view (if you were lucky enough to be at the front of the hotel). The missing tea and coffee facilities, room safe, double bed (rather than two singles pushed together) and English speaking TV channels were sorely missed. There was good wifi coverage and speed but expensive to use.

I wouldn't recommend the hotel for young travellers, upon returning to the hotel after 11:30pm, we found the doors locked and no night receptionist. After a half hour of knocking upon every window, a member of our party entered the hotel through the kitchen entrance, and was greeted by a annoyed member of staff who told us we should be in bed. There also isn't much of a bar at the hotel, and it certainly didn't seem to stay open very late.

Overal I think the hotel does have some quality, particularly in customer service and food, but is becoming run down and focus seems to be on quantity rather than quality. Those thinking about travelling with Treyn, the tour guide will either make or break the holiday, we were lucky enough to have a good one. They ran two groups during the same period which made dining a bit of a squeeze but otherwise this didn't pose to much of a problem. The train travel can be stressful (if there are delays) and luggage storage slightly limited. Also leave plenty of time after arriving back into St Pancreas due to border control checks - it took us 50 minutes to get through.

Room Tip: Request a room on floor 1 or above that are lake facing.

Stayed over Christmas with the Treyn holiday group. Our room had a cracked sink (yes I know we should have complained but having settled after a long journey, the thought of changing rooms was not appealing.) I had read a previous review re the pillows, so decided to take our own proper, not travel, ones ( it wasn't a problem) and found that together with two of the hotel's offerings, we were able to get a good night's sleep. The evening meals could be described as lacking variety, a choice of meat/fish and 2/3 veg; perhaps a little more imagination could have been shown. I had looked forward to a roaring log fire and was disappointed not to have had the pleasure except for 1 evening, and it was a pretty pathetic show even then.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake. Room at the back noisy when the rubbish bins were removed early...

Friendly and welcoming. For the price, excellent food and accommodation. This was a Christmas break and they made it feel festive, even to Father Christmas handing out presents on Christmas Eve. But one recurring theme of our group (Treyn Holidays) was the appalling pillows! Large enough but so under-stuffed with feathers so they just went totally flat. I use one pillow at home, here I had to use four folded up (they were very happy to supply extras) and still did not get a good night's sleep. If I were to return I would pack an inflatable pillow!
