“Average Hotel In a Great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Hotel Wohnbar's location is in the heart of Bamberg. A short 5-10 minute walk brinks you to the town market and pedestrian shopping strip or if you go in the other direction you can be at the Old Town hall and the very old section of Bamberg in the same amount of time. Breakfast was included and had a very good selection of food to choose from. Our room was the junior suite located on the top floor under the roof. It was very roomy and clean but one did have to watch ones head in a few areas to avoid hitting the slopped ceiling. As mentioned our room was located on the top floor and access to it was by a very winding staircase only. This hotel does not have an elevator so getting heavy luggage to the room could be an issue for some people. Parking in Bamberg is at a premium and spots in front of the Hotel are few and far between. The hotel does have an arrangement with one of the major department stores nearby to use their underground parking. A pass is issued for unlimited in and out access at 6 Euro/day which is a deal. The lone negative comment with regard to parking is on checking out you need the pass to exit the garage but then you have to return the pass to the Hotel which is a bit of a pain as most of the streets are one way. Lastly although the staff were very efficient at the Hotel they came across as aloof and did not engage with any of the guests other than to answer direct questions. After all the great engaging Hotel staff's that we had on this trip this was a bit disappointing for my girls.

Not bad. Not good. Fine for Bamberg if you want to save money. Apparently we couldn't pay with a credit card because the machine fell into a pot of soup. And our bed had a broken bar underneath it and was very uncomfortable. The owner fixed it, but it still wasn't very comfortable. Bamberg is charming and I wish we had stayed in a better place to enjoy it more.

Hotel is in an EXCELLENT location within easy walking distance to the main bridge (3 minutes) and to other areas as well. Quiet area and we felt safe throughout all of Bamberg. We were there in May and stayed in the purple room. The room was very large, clean, did not have carpet (which i like), and had a very large bathroom. Plenty of shelving to put out all your toiletries, which is awesome. Good, strong shower. Beds were comfortable. As noted by others, Demetrie was very helpful in giving us tips on what to see and where to eat. He clearly takes pride in his hometown, and it is easy to see why after spending 3 days there. Pricing was incredibly fair and well worth the upgrade (119 euros for a superior room).

In agreement with others is the no lift, ac or screens in the windows - all of which is very common to this area so I don't hold it against this hotel. They did provide a fan, which was helpful.

The only minor cons to report are: 1) breakfast was mediocre with, IMO, pretty bad coffee. The cappuccino wasn't bad however. Plenty of cafe's nearby to go pick up a good cup of coffee. The breads were just OK whereas in other places we stayed throughout Germany, the breads were incredible. 2) As large as the room was, there was no mirror anywhere in the room except for the bathroom. (That was the purple room, can't speak for the other rooms.) For us ladies who need to put on some make up while our significant other is in the shower, this would have been very helpful. 3) There was 1 armoire-type bureau that had only 1 shelf. No other furniture with drawers. So putting away and getting our clothes was just not the most convenient. Not a big deal, but shelves would have been useful. (Again, only speaking for the purple room.)

All in all, would definitely recommend this hotel without reservation. Gave it 4 instead of 5 stars mostly because of the breakfast.

Everything good that everyone else says about the hotel is true, and did they mention the beautiful modern furniture and decor? However, there is a big but. If you get the top floor suite as the last room available, it is only for the fit. There is no elevator. I was exhausted by the time I had lugged myself up there once and exhausted, discouraged and exasperated the next few times. It taught me to read about elevator availability when booking hotels. We also had to sit in one corner to get wifi up there. On the positive side, we could have slept 6 up there, hosted a dinner party for four or cocktails for 30 and still had room to dance.

We stayed in the orange room, on the second floor, that was large with a kitchenette (that we didn't use) and a nice bathroom. Room was bright, bed was comfortable, and they give you a fan since there is no air conditioning. Dimitri and the staff were very friendly and gave some good advice as to where to eat, etc. Breakfast was okay - a little disappointing compared to the breakfasts we had prior on this trip. Hotel in a great location - we walked everywhere from here.

There is no lift so you'll have to carry your luggage up stairs. Nice wooden floors - but it you're sensitive to noise - depending who is above you, you'll hear walking and such.

Hotel Wohnbar was a fantastic place to stay in Bamberg. We were upgraded upon check in to the Natur Room (all the rooms are named after something, not numbers), and it was a pretty awesome. It again was one of the few "double" rooms that we stayed in here in Europe where the bed fit two people versus two twin beds separated Ozzie and Harriet style. The hotel is right next to the University and close to everything that you want to see. Walking distance to both the main market, 4 of the 9 Breweries in town (What Bamberg is famous for), and the very happening bar district. Breakfast was included in the price and the selection was great. It was your standard German breakfast (meats, bread, cheese, coffee), so don't go looking for Bacon and Eggs. It was plenty though, and a great way to start the day. Service was fantastic too. Just make sure that you either check in before 2 or after 4. In between there is nobody manning the desk. So just plan around that and you will be fine. A great place though, with great service, and awesome rooms.

Room Tip: Make sure to plan check in before 2 or after 4. Nobody there in between. Plan ahead and you will be...

This is a nice little hotel tucked away behind the university in Bamberg. Walking distance from the shopping/nightlife areas and Dom. The room was very clean and staff was great--Dimitri showed us all of the places to go on a map when we checked in without us even asking. Bamberg is a very walkable town (if you're OK with climbing a few hills on the west side) and there are buses too. Wohnbar is also within walking distance from about 4 or 5 of Bamberg's breweries. My wife and I were in the Bordeaux room, which is on the first floor right next to the building entrance. We didn't like that for the first minute or so, but as I said, the room was very clean, the building is very secure, and before we even knew where the room was, Dimitri emphasized to us that Bamberg is a very safe town, so we felt very comfortable there. I'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Unless you have a credit card from a German Bank, it's Cash Only.
