“Yes You Can See the Altenburg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

The Altenburgblick is a modern style hotel on the edge of Bamberg. It has double rooms at the front, each with balconies with (as the name suggests) a good view up to the Altenburg, the Old Castle. You can see it from your room (if at the front).
The hotel itself can be a little tired in places (TV, shower, no Wifi in room) but has most things you need for a stay. For the rate, it is excellent value. 15-20 minutes walk up the road is the Altes Rathaus (and Schlenkerla). This distance is worth it if you either have a car (good parking at front and back of hotel) or if you just want a good night’s sleep. Up the hill to the side of the hotel is the Greifenklau, which brews its own beer and in Summer has an excellent beer garden.
Breakfast is extra but very well priced at only a few Euros. Quality is excellent.
I’ve stayed here 3 times now over the years. I will stay again soon & would recommend to anyone visiting Bamberg.

Room Tip: Single rooms are at the back & have no view of the Altenburg, but they are cheaper.

Location is near enough to the city center without being in it. Great breakfast. Nice staff. Room didn't seem as nice as previous stays - smaller and less sparkly (but still clean nevertheless). Good beer in the minibar.

The hotel was a bit hard to find by car and the exterior is a bit 70's look. But once past this impression things do improve. It is a family run hotel and this means hands on care. The room is standard and very very clean. Try to get a fortress view. It is worth it. The room is sufficent for an overnight stay. The free parking is a must in this city. The walk is downhill to the old town and yes, dear friends, its uphill coming home.
The staff are very efficient and the best thing that I liked was the breakfast. Nice wide and spacious. The food was all fresh and the light airy room, must be decorated by the wife of the owner.
Nothing flashy here, but it is great for bikers and older couples who want to be "in" yet out of the city.
Have a smoked beer and enjoy the sights.

In nice residential neigborhood that is a short walk into the old city. Free parking and wi-fi. The front desk staff were very helpful. Need directions or GPS to find hotel. Hotel refers customers to beer garden restaurant nearby that was our favorite restaurant in all of Germany. Great value for families and those with a car.

It's a pretty healthy hike from the train station as the hotel is across town. Taxi ride is expensive at 10 euro. Ugly concrete building with worn carpets. Rooms are just OK. Free wifi. Bath tub a plus. Great reception staff. Not far from good restaurants.

The Hotel garni Altenburgblick has parking which is such a plus in Bamberg which is a walled medieval city. We drove around and around trying to find parking since we arrived so early, but could not find any. We decided to go to the hotel, and it was such a relief to park and walk. The hotel room was very clean. We enjoyed the balcony. The outside is a bit 1970's, but the inside decor of the room was new. The breakfast was truly excellent!!!!!!! The Bamberg New Residence Palace will do a free English tour if you e-mail them ahead of time.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2008

We arrived in Bamberg without reservations and so a friendly guy at another hotel called the Hotel Altenbergblick and booked us 2 rooms there. When we arrived we were a bit apprehensive because the exterior of the hotel is kind of a '70's grey concrete apartment and we entered through their small back door from the parking area. The reception area was okay and their breakfast room was big, bright and airy so it being late and us being tired, we decided to stay. Their hallways could use a fresh coat of paint and new carpeting but once we got into our rooms they were clean, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was also very clean (maybe recently renovated) but behind the crisp white sheers their window frames were old with peeling paint and the room safe must have been one of the first ones ever made.
It is located in the midst of a residential area about a 10 to 15 minute walk into the old town. We did have a nice view of the old castle on top of the hill. The breakfast buffet was quite nice. All in all after a good nights sleep I would say it was okay for our one night stay but the place could be improved with a bit of a reno.

  • Liked — Very nice breakfast
  • Disliked — Hallways could use a facelift
