“Holiday with an experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Where else could you stay on an island in what historically was a monastery and be located so close to a historic city with a wonderful blend of both modern and old buildings. The Insel provides excellent accommodation and a breakfast to satisfy every need. Ideal location for long walks to enjoy the lake and in season ferry trips to many locations around the lake. Warm and friendly staff ensured a wonderful break albeit only a short stay. Will certainly stay again when revisiting the City.

Room Tip: Room 127 overlooking the lake and on the first floor - exceptional.

What a great hotel. Excellent value and a superb location. I would recommend this hotel to anybody. Rooms great. Food good and service second to none.
The hotel restaurant was great for both breakfast and dinner.
The only negative was the car park and lack of free wifi both would be easy to change.

Room Tip: Any room here is good.

This former monastery sits on the shores of Lake Konstanz that can be reached from eastern side via ferry boat. What a beautiful way to be introduced to this city that is bike friendly. Our only issue was waiting for the train gates to open before being able to turn off the main road onto this private island that is Steigenberger Inselhotel. Having driven there, the parking is accessable and private.

We enjoyed the outside patio where the service was cordial and the icecream sundae, "heavenly". Our breakfast was first rate in offering all the choices, whether more German fare, such as meats & cheese, plus the eggs could be prepared to order to suit american tastes.

Our bike ride took us to the north one day across the bridge near the hotel and then along a tree-lined path where we discovered wonderful restaurants and a casino. A park near our accomodations was beautiful in its natural state, whereas so many european parks are over manicured.

We enjoyed our stay at the Steigenberger Inselhotel, its location made it easy to walk into shopping and dining locations without having to use our car or taxis. This is a nice value for anyone seeking quiet accomodations with a great staff.

Room Tip: Bodensee side or inner court yard are quiet.........and peacful.

This hotel is a former monastery and retains some of the original features although it became a hotel in the late nineteenth century. Extremely helpful and friendly staff, very clean and excellent food in both restaurants. It is within easy walking distance of both the main railway station and the landing stages for the lake steamers.

What a pity that such a beautiful hotel should spoil itself by such atrocious restaurant service. Staff were polite both here and in the hotel, but 30-45 minutes wait between courses is not what we are used to in a five-star hotel. A request to change tables at dinner was refused, and "maybe tomorrow night" did not happen. Food choice for dinner was limited, but breakfast was excellent. Obviously the hotel can make more profit from weddings and conferences than it can from mere half-board guests. Overall, I would not recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: We overlooked the garden, with a shared terrace on the second floor. Air-conditioning was so quiet...

We spent the second week of our honeymoon here. The highlight of the week had to be the Gala Evening which included the most amazing firework displays we have ever seen. Our second floor room overlooked the lake and was spacious and very clean. Breakfast had an extensive choice of cold and cooked food and the service was very good. The evening meal was very good, but the vegetarian choices could have been better. The service varied and was sometimes too slow, but the interaction with other British guests compensated for this. We do not speak much German and found it a little irritating that no leaflets for local attractions were available in English, but we managed to get by without too much trouble and the reception staff were happy to help when asked.

Room Tip: Choose a lake view. Balconies are available but not worth the extra cost as they are very small.

We stayed here for a week beginning 27th July 2013. The room and view were excellent. Lake view is a must and ask for second or third floor. Can be a little noisy with the terrace below. There were two weddings during our stay which did result in rather disturbed nights sleep. Food on the whole was good though choice was rather limited. Service on certain nights left a lot to be desired. There appeared to be no system and on one night when we all had to move inside after a sudden downpour soaked the terrace, all but two staff remained outside to clear the tables, leaving us waiting for our meals inside. It appeared we were less important than the cutlery! Another evening when the weather was not good enough to eat on the terrace we enquired about having a table by a window and were told in no uncertain manner they were all booked months in advance. There were only three couples in there at the time including us. We were then sat against the back wall which as the evening continued, became obvious that this was were all the British guests had to sit! It did feel a bit like segregation. It was a pity that these events clouded our view of the hotel. On the positive side the breakfast choice was the best I have ever experienced and these staff were much more helpful.

Room Tip: Request a high floor
