First time to this little restaurant which is situated next to the garage at St Merryn crossroads. We walked up from our holiday cottage, having pre-booked and were made to feel instantly welcome. This friendliness and discussion about food and wine, was kept up throughout the visit, feeling totally genuine, as if the two running front of house were enjoying serving people, as much as everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals.
We had some olives on the table to start with and to this we added the excellent bread selection with olive oil dip. We washed this down with a small lager, before ordering the food and wine. We both started with scallops on apple risotto and parma ham. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the apple risotto was a perfect partner on the plate. In my wife's terminology, it was a starter "to die for". We both struggle to think of a better one we've had.
I had Monkfish for main, again this was with risotto, it was another perfectly cooked piece of fish, with the risotto having just the right stickiness and consistency. My wife had lamb, with tapenade and felt that if there was any thing to be critical about, it was the lamb, not as tender as could be and with some gristle in it, but the rest of the dish was to the high standards of everything else.
The desserts were fantastic, I had a cheese platter with a very nice class of port and I forget exactly what my wife had, a sweet dessert, which she accompanied with a dessert wine that wasn't to sweet, with a lovely orange flavour in it.
We visit the area every year, so will look in next year and if the same folk are running it, we'll be back.
