“Not for The Claustrophobic or Unhealthy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

Incredible! Has to be seen to be believed. I am glad I toured Derinkuyu Underground Museum even though I consider myself somewhat claustrophobic. I was very relieved to have a private guide for the cave tour, as being stuck in a large group could have been uncomfortable. While coming up a long, narrow, low, tunnel, that was the only way in, and out; there were a couple of other visitors sweating profusely and breathing heavy and it occurred to me, if they collapsed on the stairs everyone deeper in the cave would be trapped.

“I WAS SO OVERWHELMED”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

My visit to Derinkuyu Underground City was something that I just could not have imagined. This is truly a city of tunnels and underground caverns that are mysterious as well as a remarkable engineering feat. The construction of this maze of tunnels has to be seen to be truly appreciated. I would even go as far as to say, even if you have a slight case of claustrophobia, try your absolute best to control it and go down for even a couple of levels. The design of this city is 8 levels of pure engineeing genius. There are large kitches, stables for annimals, a fresh air supply shaft along with the ability to compartmentalize the sections for defense from the enemies. The tunnels are well lite, so you feel comfortable moving around them and at least for me, there was never any feeling of being confined.
I guarantee that you will be totally amazed at what you will discover below.

“First Caves now an entire City!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

Within a couple of days you are familiar with the Cave landscape and Valleys of Central Anatolia...then you enter Derinkuyu and you are left 'Breathless'! Literally too!! 8 levels of accommodation, storage, pathways even a church...all underground! Historically, Derinkuyu is a very significant structure with the city being built as a refuge from the enemy but even as a structure its simply mind blowing! The queue outside gets pretty long if you arrive late in the morning but its organized enough that the it keeps moving, although at times it can get pretty claustrophobic inside. The pathways leading from one floor to another are quite small and you will have to hunch over with your shoulders touching both walls as you walk. In some places, you may need to even crawl. Each floor is unique in some way that it serves a purpose. You have living quarters in one, storage areas in another, kitchen in one and even a wine cellar in another. The 8th floor, the last one tourists are allowed to visit, has a huge opening, a central hall and a church, the 'T' shaped design signifying a 'Cross'. There is even a burial chamber. It can get pretty cold downstairs and as you climb back up and hit the sun, you are overwhelmed with a feeling...Which world was I in? A definite must see.

“Unbelievable underground city!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2012

If you're not claustrophobic, this is another MUST visit place in Cappadocia! It's truly incredible to see how people lived 8 floors underground in the ancient times! It could very crowded at times, & turns to be very hot! You will be bending most of the time & walking through very narrow places, then climb 8 floors all the way up!
