“Perfect for a romantic week-end”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2010

I decided to leave a review about the hotel, where I spent a weekend in March ‘10 with my girlfriend, because I was very satisfied with my stay and with the attention we received from the staff. The hotel is a beautiful and characteristic structure (it is housed in a old tower) and it is located in a fantastic position. Other than these values, we fond the courtesy of a highly qualified staff, who throughout the period of our stay has ensured that every detail was perfect and that we were completely satisfied with the service. Our room was extremely clean and made with attention to the smallest details, so we could enjoy all the possible comforts during our (unfortunately short!) stay. Given the positive experience I’ve had, this is a hotel that I would strongly recommend, especially for couples who want to spend a romantic weekend in a beautiful place.

Hotel has a beutifull location and thus can provide a great view from the cliff , small but cute garden restaurant and a nice pool.
As the hotel is build on the base of the old stone tower at the edge of the cliff the dining rooms are rather small and often were full during peak times (breakfest and dinner). An opposite was our Double Room with Sea Side view. Plenty of room and a nice terrace.
Indoor restaurant as well ads the garden restaurant offer a good typical italian kitchen and plenty of excellent wines. Service in the restaurant however was not as that relaxing as the surrounding nature. I think the restaurant staff was not organised very well and oftne caused mistakes or missed the order or generally looked confused and very very very busy. The hotel offers a small swimming pool below the garden restaurant due to its location on cliff you can enjoy nice view and relax. Alternatively the hotel has a private beach in the bay however 800m down the cliff, against fee 18€ and not suitable for small children. Btw it is a nice walk to the beach.
Generally i would not recommend this hotel to families with young kids. Its rather suitable for a romantic and quiet stay for a honeymooners or couples.

The place:
The Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola is in a beautiful setting and it certainly has one of the best sunsets I've ever seen- ideal to sit with a glass of prosecco and relax. Rooms were not amazing but they served their purpose and the feel of the hotel. Views were great especially as we had a sea view.

We stayed there for a week for our honeymoon and were greeted very warmly- the staff are lovely although the service can be sporadic at times. As it was our honeymoon, we were happy to relax for the entire week but if you're the adventurous type then you may feel a bit trapped without a car. We got a taxi to the nearest port (San Stefano) and it cost us 50-60 euros for a return but the food there was well worth it.

Food and Drink:
The Piccola's restaurant was very good although we had one terrible night where everything was wrong- they refunded half. It is expensive: a meal for two with one bottle of wine was on average 140 euros. The thing that we were most shocked about was the water- a one litre bottle cost 8euros!! That's about £6.50 for a bottle of water (tap water tastes horrible) so if you're going, I would get some from a shop first. Two gin and tonics were 28euros... Although we didn't expect it to be cheap- this seemed a little extreme so beware!

When we left the hotel, we purchased some bottles of wine from the bar to take with us and we discovered that there was a HUGE markup. We were paying 32euros for a bottle with dinner and we bought it for 7euros at the end of the holiday. This may seem obvious but it's something to consider if you're on a budget. Saying that, they have a great selection of very good wines. The Pinot was one of the best we've had.

The Guests:
Mostly Italians so it was quite nice to be an anonymous English couple. It would help to know some Italian although most staff do speak English. Look out for the wine waiter- he's the twin of Manuel from Fawlty Towers!! There were a couple of families there and the kids seemed to scream a lot- not ideal when you're trying to relax. I don't think the place is appropriate for children as there isn't a lot to do.

Would we return? Probably not in the near future, maybe when we're older and richer. We have given it a 3/5 mostly because of prices and the room style but when all is said and done- it was a brilliant place to stay and certainly a lovely location.

We stayed here for two nights in room with a sea view. As other people have also mentioned the view is truly spectacular at any time of the day. We had dinner outside and the food was okay but coupled with the view, the evening sky and Isola del Giglio in the distance is was quite magic. However, the TV on in the dining room whilst you are trying to eat is incredibly tacky.

The rooms and bathrooms are fine at best although not up to the 4 star standard. Our room had A/C, Sky TV and a mini bar and the bed was comfortable.

They have a beach area that is open to hotel guests and is some 800m from the hotel. We walked down the first day and be advised that it is a long and steep way down and then up!!

There is not a proper beach but there is a nice set up of umbrellas and lounger on platforms cut into the rock. There is also a restaurant for lunch. Note that it is an additional €15 per day to use the beach area and sun loungers. However, there are a number of life guards so swimming is very safe.

In the hotel the staff are very friendly and were always happy to offer advice or answer any queries.

Overall the hotel is good but not at €300 plus per night. This was in our view a rip-off and yes we did know the price before arriving but expectations and reality have a habit of not always meeting.

The place is realy great, nice views. Everything very clean.
Ther rooms are placed as bungalows and need urgently to be refurnished and painted. Very bad hot water situation due to low presure.
Restaurant very poor impression. Good quality. Related with the restaurants in p.Stefano very high prices - limited offers.

Finaly you pay the place - for about 100 Euro more you can go to a realy 5-star-hotel in porto ercole "The pelicano" which offers everything.

Conclusion: High price - regular rooms - very nice area.

Like other TA members, we found the views remarkable and the rooms in need of some updating (we had a sea-view room). After travelling among the Tuscan hilltowns, we wanted a place by the sea for one night, within easy reach of Civitavecchia for a cruise the next day. It was excellent for that. Gorgeous setting, comfortable sleep, excellent dinner. We did not avail ourselves of the beach or the pool, though the pool looked very inviting.

It is a long (though pretty) drive from the nearest town, set high on hills overlooking the water; restful and quiet. Because it is a hilly setting, though, be aware that no matter where you go you will encounter steps - up or down to your room, up or down to the dining room, all outdoors (not so nice if it rains). We had sunny, dry weather so rain was no issue, and we negotiated the steps without problem, but they could be difficult for older people.

The staff was definitely helpful, expecially carrying some heavy suitcases for us down to our room. Also we came in just after lunch was over and they still served us, albeit a bit reluctantly. The restaurant at lunchtime is a bit drab and damp-feeling; at night, with candles, it is quite charming. When I asked our waiter for something that was not on the menu (prosciutto e melone; that should be on every menu!), he made sure that some was fixed for me -- not only prepared, but beautifully presented and perhaps the best that I'd had in Italy. We were impressed by their kitchen!

Would we stay there again? Probably. It's pricey. They try to be a bit fancier than the bedrooms/bathrooms suggest. But you can get a great meal there, have a good night's sleep, see some gorgeous views, so I guess it's worth it.

Where do we start? We took a cab from the Train station and enjoyed the 1/2 hour ride through the City of Porto San Stefano and up the mountain to the hotel. After checking in and walking the property we thought the rooms we a bit overrated. We were informed that they would be freshening them up for the 2007 season. But never mind that. You are not staying in the room all day when there is a great pool with disappearing edge looking out over the Mediteraian Sea and my honey floating in my arms while we look out and see the Island "Isola del Gigli" what a view. Then a short walk down the road from the hotel is their private beach. No sun here until after 11am, but I liked getting there at 10am to stake my claim to the "right" spot and umbrella on the deck. The snack bar has great food and drinks, you can spend all day soaking in the sun & water while eating great warm & cold dishes of fresh made local seafood cuisine, better take the free ride back up! The hotel puts on a lovely dinner outside by the Tower and there is no better sunset anywhere! Ask the hotel for transportation back to the seaside town for an afternoon of shopping or strolling and then an evening of dinner and an outdoor local concert. The big yachts in the port will fancy any guy & gal. Great Hotel Manager here with a very helpful and friendly staff.
