“A piece of Capri in Tuscany”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013

My first sensation when I reached the small Cala Piccola beach, a few minutes walk from my room, was: "Here we are in Capri!".
Argentario is a really stunning place, and the position of this Hotel is in the most panoramic side of the Argentario Mountain. Here the view of Giglio and Giannutri Islands are really spectacular. The enviroment in which this Hotel is soaked is an example of MACCHIA MEDITERRANEA, is located on a magnificent cliff, a lot of flowers, gardens, small vegetation and a green coloured sea.
During the sunset, you can stay at the outside bar, drinking an Italian aperitivo and enjoying the dramatic view, hoping to see a whale spray amid the waves.
This Hotel is very quite, recommended for couples, consider you need a car to move, to reach Porto Santo Stefano is a 10 minutes ride by car, Orbetello 25 minutes ride.
The Hotel is pretty lovable, the staff is very polite, the rooms are large, confortable and with stunning view on the Capo d'Uomo and the sea. There is an Italian fine restaurant and a small SPA too.
At least I recommend this Hotel to everyone spends few days at the Argentario.

Although some of the rooms are a little old-fashioned, the location is amazing, the staff really take care of you and the gardens are beautiful with stunning views across the sea. It's not really a place to take children (which we did), but if you're on a romantic trip I couldn't think of a nicer place to stay.

While aimlessly driving, we were running out of options to find lodging for the night when we saw the entrance to this hotel. Surprise--they had a room. It turned out to be reasonably priced, the views were spectacular, our room was spacious and well-appointed, the grounds were meticulously cared for--and we didn't have to drive any further for our dinner. The food was average and slightly pricey but worth it for the convenience and surroundings. Next time in the area, I will intentionally book several nights. What a great getaway and low-key experience!

The first thing to say is that the location is very spectacular and special. The hotel is built on the cliff tops of monte Argentario with spectacular views (from some areas) of the sea and the island Gigli. The best view is from the pool which is the best bit about the hotel, a sort of infinity thing but large enough for a decent swim. Chilling out by the pool watchng the sun go down over gigli is a an enchanting experience. Sunsets are always weather dependent but this was clearly a place to see a truly memorable ones with a glass of wine in the garden.

The hotel has access to a private beach located at the bottom of the cliffs. When it says that the beach is piccola it is an understatement. Micro would a better description of the beach itself. Instead the beach consists of terraces of sun bathing spots surrounding a small inlet or cove. There is access to the sea from the rocks but when we visited the red flags were out because the sea was pretty rough and swimming would have been dangerous (easy to be dashed against the rocks). That said, it was still a lovely place to sun bathe and there is a good restaurant serving excellent sea food right by the beach.

The hotel rooms were adequate but a bit dated. It felt a bit like the hotel had been built in the 1990s and not updated that much since. We had a standard room with a side view so you could see a bit of sea but not much.

I can see the standard of the restaurant is a matter of contention on other reviews. I thought it was ok. The problem is that it is a bit formal (early 1990s fit out and ambience again) and the prices are high. Having taken itself so seriously the food doesn't quite walk the walk. I had a very pleasant steak taglia but then it should have been at 40 euros. A couple of the other dishes weren't quite as good although if I was paying a lot less i might not have minded so much. A good wine list and the wines didn't seem as expensive as the food. If you don't want to eat in the restaurant then there isn't much other choice - it is a bit of hair raising drive back into Porto santa stefano. Whilst the area around the hotel is nice (lots of large villas owned by rich Romans), Porto Santa stefano is not the best place we visited in Tuscany.

Where this hotel fell short was the service. It had a real end of season feel and wasn't the most welcoming. I didn't feel like it was as customer focused as other places and there were a few things they weren't quite on top of. For example it was surprisingly difficult to get a drink to watch the spectacular sunset. So its a good hotel in a fantastic location.

My husband and I stayed for five nights in Silver Week, half board. It was the fourth time we had stayed at this hotel but this time we were bitterly disappointed. The chef had changed since our last visit and the food at times was not cooked through and in some cases inedible. The Pellegrino was expensive and was not saved for the following evening. The bedroom had a lovely view but the bathroom was falling to pieces (shower cubicle) and orange stain down the back of the toilet. The pool was a green colour and the walls were black in places.
There were at least eight mistakes on the bill, all in the hotel's favour. The same aperitifs each night varied in price!
The lights fused on one evening at 10pm which resulted in us having to move rooms for the night.
We were really sad as we have enjoyed several visits in the past (with our children). I know it is end of season but the standard should be the same at all times of the year. Sadly, we will not be returning.

Room Tip: Some of the bathrooms have been updated. Make sure you ask for one that has been modernised.

Sipping an excellent local white wine I watched the sun set in a blaze of deep red over the sea between Monte Argentario and the island of Giglio and reflected that there are few places left around the mediterranean which are so unspoiled. Monte Argentario is a favourite retreat of the Roman cognoscenti. If you like modern hotels and busy nightlife don't go. I discovered it 25 years ago and it has changed very little. Two working fishing ports and a handful of hotels plus plenty of restaurants, all of which serve freshly caught fish, are the sum total of this mountain island off the Tuscan coast. Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola is not cheap or particularly 'swish' but perched on the side of the mountain, overlooking the sea with distant islands, it really doesn't need to do much more than provide very comfortable accommodation, helpful and friendly staff and a pool with plenty of loungers for sunbathing. During the summer meals are usually served outdoors on their spectacular headland. The food is adequate but frankly one eats as well if not better in many of the other restaurants in Porto Santo Stephano and often for less money. At the bottom of the mountain side is a beach to which the hotel provides a regular mini bus service although you can drive down or even walk. Like most Italian beaches it is private, not owned by the hotel, and therefore there is a charge for the umbrella and loungers. Given the excellent facilities, which include a very good restaurant, beach bar, showers and changing rooms, the charge is not unreasonable but it is only worth going to spend the day. This is a very rocky beach and not really suitable for children but for adults keen on sun worship or swimming in the sea, it is sheer delight.
The hotel rooms vary in size. Whatever you do, ask for a sea view otherwise you will be extremely disgruntled! And a final word of warning- if sheer drops and hairpin bends make you queasy, Monte Argentario and this hotel may not be the place for you!

During our trip in tuscany, we've stayed at hotel Torre di Cala Piccola for one night. The mistake was to take the half-board which was overpriced and the food quality was very low.

The hotel itself is romantic, in a romantic place, very nice swimming pool(but very cold) and a good but EXPENSIVE service. A small can of soda for 5 EUR is too high for a 4* Hotel.

The Restaurant itself is everywhere in the hotel heavily promoted and someone can get a feeling that it would be a Michelin * restaurant. Unfortunately it is not true. The food is below average, not tasty, nothing special. I've had a beef tartare which was the worst tartare in my life. Then we've had some fish, chicken and pasta. All of the food was prepared without a piece of salt, pepper, no vegetables, no flavor, nothing.. Just plain cooked food.

Believe me, it isn't culinary, I'm culinary :)
