“Fawlty Towels”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2009

Nice place, good location, rooms small but adequate, 5 mins from Samoens. Owners are really in wrong trade. Remember that feeling when you turned up a bit late at your future mother-in-laws....Have to be in by 11.30pm and watched constantly by owners every time we moved
Had to ask for fresh towels on 4th day that was the only time they were changed. Very poor breakfast for 10 euros refused my polite request for muesli or an egg with a curt NON! so if you have to stay there because everywhere else is full don't have breakfast better to drive into Samoens and go into Cafe Jaysinia where you can get the same for 4.80 euros. or alternatively try Hotel Le Morillon (a mile up the road) a little more expensive but great host, loads of choice for breakfast, jacuzzi, spa, pool and fresh towels every day!!

We went to this hotel as it was contained in the Alistair Sawdays guide. Having had a long drive we arrived and the welcome was non-existent.

The room was awful. Although it was split-level it was so narrow you could also almost touch both sides when standing in the middle. The "en suite" bathroom and toilet turned out to be sited in two cupboards under the stairs.

The general decor was run down and cheap. There were cheap plastic cable boxes running all over the place on what they pretended to be a gorgeous wooden chalet.

The room had a leaking skylight, but instead of repairing it, they had drawn the blind and covered the window with thick dirty opaque corrugated plastic.

The whole effect was so horrible and claustrophobic that within 15 minutes we decided to find somewhere else.

We explained this to the owner, who demanded that we have to pay for that night even though she already had our 100 euro deposit. She had sent us some small print in the midst of the email correspondence that indicated that the cost of your entire stay is payable immediately on arrival. We were resigned to losing the deposit but this was incredible.

She became increasingly rude and aggressive. In the end we just left with her howling threats after us.

We have already contacted Sawdays who indicated this travesty of a guesthouse would be removed from their guide. I have no idea how it came to be recommended in the first place.

You ought to have your head examined before you consider staying at this place.

  • Liked — Leaving! It was terrible.
  • Disliked — Everything, but the owner was deeply unpleasant.

It is true what they say that the hosts of any B&B/ chambre d'hotes make the experience & in the case of Le Moulin de Bathieu both my partner & I were not made to feel very welcome. If you can deal with the frosty reception from the owners then a fine house awaits you with special views & comfortable rooms. Breakfast is poor & costs an extra 8euros per person. Also make sure that if you stay here you are travelling by car as it is not in the centre but a short drive up the mountain.
So in summary, nice house shame about the hosts who at times were rude.
