“A very special hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2009

Went to Samoen for a Christmas skiing holiday with my daughter (11 going on18), my son (12) both very keen skiers and my partner who is a non skier, we were attracted to Samoen by its reputation for quaintness, its access to the Grand Massif, the short transfer time from Geneva, the fact that we could fly from Oxford Airport, the resorts history of earlyish snow and Samoen's reputation for being family friendly. The only hard part being the £ / € exchange rate, ghastly!
Hotel de Neige et Roc was chosen for its facilities and the reviews on Trip Advisor, we were unable to get rooms in the main hotel and stayed in the 'studio apartments' to its rear on a half board basis. What a pleasent surprise it was to realise, once we had aclimatised to our new surroundings what a very special hotel it is. The staff are very attentive, helpful, pleasant and genuinly nice, many of them are trying their hardest to improve their English and were very patient when it came to any of us attempting to use French! There was always someone on duty who spoke English and could sort out any problems. The food and the cellar were beyond anything we had expected,,, if you are into your food and wines this is a very good place to go. The other noticable thing about the hotel is that it feels ever so 'friendly', the decor is both soothing and interestingly put together (if you go there you will understand what I mean).
The only dislike was the small baths though we did get used to them after the first couple of days.
The ski store and boot room in the studio apartment building was adequate though the 'timed' lighting had us in hysterics in the afternoon as it would often go out four or five times whilst we were getting our boots off .............the button is to hand to put them back on.
The skiing was great though the wind did occassionally shut the operating lifts for Samoen and Flaine. There is always the option of catching the ski bus to Morillon or Les Carroz which are more shelterd and have a lot of runs through trees. We had instruction every day and used two different ski schools for private lessons and would seriously reccomend Zig Zag. My partner took up snow shoeing and adored every minute of it, her guide / instructor was introduced to us via Zig Zag.
The 'thing' that makes the Neige et Roc extra special is the hands on approach of the owners, Olivier is a true hotelier (his parents started the hotel and his mother still helps out) who with his wife Francoise give the hotel it's personal touch and hugely welcoming atmosphere.

Samoëns is a family friendly resort ideal for beginners and intermediates with plenty of self catering accommodation and a well earned reputation with British skiers for two reasons : not only is the pretty Alpine village easily accessible by road, being just five hours from Paris, and a mere 45 kms from Geneva, making it a very short transfer and an ideal touring area for a long weekend - but it is also a convenient hub for easy access to the international resort of Flaine. The other reason for its popularity is that Samoëns boasts the wonderful Hotel Neige et Roc, a comfortable three star hotel with haute cuisine that prompts both repeat bookings and rave reviews from its Trip Advisor correspondents. Three photographs attached show a sample of a sumptuous Christmas Dinner

Our recent stay at the Neige et Roc was most enjoyable and great value at 72 EUR DBB per day.The hotel has excellent facilities with both indoor and outdoor pools and a tennis court. The rooms are of good standard although the rooms facing the tennis court are very warm in summer.

The owner's are very attentive as are the friendly young staff. The food is of an excellent standard with a 5/6 course dinner each evening.Miss the fondue evening unless you like that sort of thing.

The village of Samoens is pleasant with several shopsThere are several very good walks with nice scenery a fifteen minute drive from the village.

Stayed for 4 nights half board. Pleasant foyer and spa area. Rooms clean and food reasonable. Would suggest avoiding fondue night unless you are fond of loud and banal music. Owners pleasant but not the most informed about such essentials as the detailed working of the ski bus service. Would definitely stay in Samoens again though not sure about Neige et Roc- I think they need more competition.

We stayed in the self catering apartments at the hotel with our children aged 5 and 10 years. Our room (no 56) was south facing and had sunshine all day. Excellent views of the mountains from the balcony. Room was clean and well appointed except for the kitchen which only had two hot plates and a microwave to cook with.
The hotel is in a good location situated only five minutes walk from the centre of this small town. The free bus to the ski lift stops outside every fifteen minutes, alternatively it is a pleasant fifteen minute walk.
The bar, reception, and restaurant areas of the hotel are cosy. The owners were very friendly and there were nice touches such as free fresh pastries at reception every day. The indoor pool and changing area was very clean.
Samoens is a small town with a good selection of reasonably priced shops and restaurants( a main course, dessert and drinks for four was about fifty euros). There is an ice rink and a new leisure centre has nearly been completed.
The gondola ski lift is only about four years old. It is a ten minute ride to the top and you alight at the beginners slopes. All facilities here also seemed new.
We visited a week before UK school half term and the resort was very quiet. Taxi transfer time by taxi from Geneva was 80 minutes.

Decided to go away for xmas for the first time and it couldn't be anywhere but the white stuff for christmas! Needed a place which would cater for a single traveller/non skiing grandparents and a family with a 4 and 7 yr old to have childcare and lessons and of course a reasonable area for us skiers.
After much research settled on Samoens as I had read about it for years as being a lovely village to stay with access to skiing in flaine. The Niege et Roc was found and checked with this site and was also on another ski companies books (the pictures wowed the in laws and it was settled )
Booked flights with easyjet from Bmth - Gen eva (finally found our way out of the french side) to hire the cars. (Go up one level from the arrival hall straight to the far right corner and through the security doors).
Geneva gorgeous at night with all the lights. If you want to avoid the swiss tax take the road to Ambilly through Geneva. Took about 1 half hrs to get to Samoens - neige et roc is on the road to verchaix.
The hotel is lovely - very alpine with lots of wood and low ceilings, rooms were immaculate and the staff very friendly. Cosy fire in the bar and wonderful 5 course meals. For xmas we paid about 770euros for a weeks half board. There was a xmas market in the streets of the village (about 5 mins level walk) with all the fairy lights and music it really created a wonderful atmosphere. No snow in the village unfortunately and also pretty sparse up at 1600. There were a few runs open for beginners and over at morillon esserts they had a couple of runs with artificial snow.
If you need a nursery or ski school for a 7 yrs old then the 'village des enfants' at Morillon esserts is the closest place to get to. Took about 10 mins to get up the mountain to drop them off for the lessons.
We had to drive to the highest resort Flaine to do our skiing (if you need to do this purchase your day ski pass at Morillon for Flaine ) the queues were so slow!!! Also did a day in Avoriaz - very busy and the queuing was awful. When are they going to get some automation up there!!
We have not been put off going away but may wait until new year next time and definitely a glacier /higher resort.

Stayed at Neige et Roc for 3 nights before going onto our main holiday in Argentiere and would have liked to stay longer! The food was absolutely superb, the pool and spa very relaxing and Oliver and Francoise the owners were really charming and helpful people. The hortel was suggested by Peak Retreats our tour operator who told us it was one of the best hotels they featured in the area. We have already decided to book again for next year but for a whole week this time. If you want a good instructor ask for Pascal D at the ESF.
