“Compact Modern Ticked all the boxes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

Stayed here over New Years in a refurbished apt for 3/4 overlooking the outdoor heated pool (not that hot) but Saunas Gr8)! with hubby & 2 kids aged 15 & 10. The boys had bunkbeds in an alcove in the entrance to the apartment the room had no door (this is typical of ski apts not an issue for us but something to be aware of) plenty of storage underbeds & enough room for bags. Modern bathroom with separate WC, no hairdryer, flat screen tv for BBC World News. Our sleeping arrangements were the sofa with a pullout bed on legs underneath, not the best nights sleep but so long as you have exhausted yourselves on the slopes you will sleep TIP (bag the sofa as the pull out bed is the worst)! The Pool is not very hot but the kids used it a couple of times the saunas were very popular & an added bonus. Safe was 2 euros a day, We used the WIFI with no problems, Overall a great base, very close to lifts, bars & restaurants if you want luxury it may not be for you but it is modern, warm, quiet & clean but we had a fab time & weather & we would return.

The rooms were basic but clean and with your own cooking facilities it is handy to eat lunch as eating out can be pricey. Beds are not the most comfortable but the restaurant on site is very nice with good food and service. We had half board as part of our package and it was worth it. They also do take away pizza as well. Hotel location is great you are a couple of steps to the piste and you can wander into the small town in a few minutes. Overall not the high spec hotel but good value for money and ideal for us with family of 5.

Our apartment was well appointed and adequate for 3 growing teenagers although he living room was a bit cramped for all 5 of us together. We bought a week's worth of wifi but the signal was patchy at times. The residence is in a great location and it was very easy to get from the apartment to both the slopes and shops etc. We bought a 'Freedom Card' in advance which allowed us 3 meals at the restaurant and we were able to sample the local specialities - fondue, raclette, tartiflette and pierre chaud - and I would thoroughly recommend this if you want a break from self catering. The actual resort is brilliant for beginners with lots of green slopes within easy access. We would definitely consider staying at Les Bergers again if we returned to L'Alpe D'Huez.

Room Tip: Try and get a south facing room if you want the sun

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago as part of our trip to cycle Alpe D'huez. I have to say it is great; location is fab, good price and staff very nice. Lovely heated pool which my 1 year old really enjoyed. Bedroom was good size and bed very comfortable. Most importantly the apartments are very well sound proofed so you can be assured of a good night's sleep.

I agree fully with review by Ellenbys. The residence could not be in a better location. Our apartment was quite small but well appointed. The mattresses are too hard for my taste and i woke up a bit stiff every morning. But the curtains were thick and the room pitch black which was great.
We had a tub (perfect after a day on the slopes) and a balcony, although we didn't use it since it was facing North.
Our daughter (3) went to the ski school (5 min away) and we were a very short walk from the slopes and shops.
Staff at the reception was friendly although not always very efficient (it took 3 days to get a barrier we had ordered delivered and the same amount of time to get a baby cot + chair we had not ordered removed). One of the two entrance cards didn't work, resulting in my daughter and I being stuck outside because the reception was not open between Noon and 16h that day. A technician was swiftly dispatched and he diligently fixed the problem.
The swimming pool is small but lovely and well heated. The floor is the changing room was dirty so bring your flip flops along!
The food at the restaurant is a bit pricey but very decent, and staff is efficient and friendly.
The wifi is a disaster: don't Waste your money!
Our apartment was very clean and quiet, on the top floor as requested.

Overall a very satisfactory stay.

Yes, accommodation for skiing holidays is over-priced compared to what you get elsewhere. It always has been. And yes, the appartments can be battered about a bit, especially if people can't be bothered to use any ski lockers provided and take their equipment into their rooms. All ski resorts can be noisy and not all appartments have fantastic views. That's our experience over the years.

So, if you accept all of the above, this accommodation ranks quite highly in our book. The resort is a relatively short transfer-time from Grenoble or Lyon airports and Les Bergers is very conveniently situated for the slopes. If you are a first-time, or limited experience, skier, don't let anyone convince you that catching a shuttle bus is easy in ski boots and carrying skis and poles because believe me, you may well be shattered before you even reach the snow! At Les Bergers you don't have far to walk up to the lifts and ESF ski school meeting point and you can ski back down. Or, depending on where you've hired your equipment from, you might be able to leave boots and skis overnight in the shop. Take this option if it's available. So, location is great.

Staff are very pleasant and helpful. always cheerful and professional. A faulty coffee jug was replaced immediately and no charge made for a glass broken by us.

Lifts are swift. We usually request rear (South-facing) appartments on the 5th or 6th floors - views are lovely. This year, after a 3 year gap, we discovered that our appartment had been very nicely refurbished with modern wood laminate flooring, smart bathroom and kitchen area (with much improved Halogen hob), new curtains and doors. The shower works brilliantly - full pressure and constant hot water at all hours. Duvets and pillows were clean and comfortable. If you are arriving after a long journey, you might want to consider paying extra for the bed-making service.so they are made up on arrival. Beds are firm but not uncomfortable. We found most things we needed were present although you might want to take scissors, tongs and oven gloves. Cleanliness of the appartment was very good indeed.

Space-wise, we always have a 4-berth appartment for 2 adults and 1 child, which is perfect, but I would say there is ample storage space for 4 adults. More mugs and glasses would be handy and I have mentioned this to the Residence.

The free outdoor swimming pool is beautifully heated. Lockers are free and very secure. Beware, communal changing areas!

La Fondue restaurant in the foyer area serves good food including all the local specialities. It's not the most expensive place to eat in Alpe d'Huez either. In previous years we've taken the evening meal option there and also, instead, used the Food Pack Service, a company that will deliver all your food for the whiole week. The nearest supermarket is pretty-well stocked too.

Price-wise, we have been both during and outside school holidays. Obviously the latter is much cheaper but Les Bergers compares very favourably with elsewhere at any time.

I can't think of anything NOT to recommend about this Residence. People often use the word 'basic' - well, ski accommodation does tend to be as it works on the premise that you are out all day skiing and only need a place to eat, wash and lay your weary head! If you went for super-luxury you wouldn't get the benefit of it anyway! However, we find Les Bergers has everything we need and more. I understand that not all appartments have been refurbished yet so it is definitely worth enquiring. If I understood correctly, they should all have been done by September this year.

Our impression is that Alpe d'Huez is a mainly younger person's resort. So that can make for some noise in the early hours but I doubt if there are many resorts where you could say that never happens. However, we heard no noise whatsoever from neighbouring appartments so sound-proofing must be good. Any noise comes from the corridor and lift areas and I suppose if I had to find a drawback it is that the Reception is not manned overnight if you wanted to complain about other residents. But as I said, it's fine once they are inside their own appartments.

Hope you have a great time if you decide to give this resort and accommodation a try!

Room Tip: South facing on 5th or 6th floors but check which appartments have been refurbished so far.

We travelled with Crystal holidays and this accommodation was far more basic than I expected. The C4 room allocated was far too small for two adults and 2 kids. I don't expect to have my bed a foot away from the fridge and cooker.....
The location was excellent though and we could not have wished for easier access to the slopes and free resort buses.
