The Hotel Les Chalets is a quaint smallish hotel situated just down the road (about 150 metres) from the Olympe 1 gondola that takes you up to Meribel 1450. The Olympe gondola 1 leads onto 2 and then finally 3 before arriving at the top station. Although the gondola time is advertised as taking about 20 minutes, when I timed it the one day it was more like 30 minutes (28 to be exact) plus there is a good 5 minute walk down steps or a 2-3 minute ski down to the Chaudanne area where the main lifts are in Meribel. The thing is each day we were wasting over an hour of skiing time (30 mins each way on the gondola) plus the queuing time at the end of the day to get back on the gondola to come down. The good thing about the Olympe gondola is that it does shut at 5.00pm in peak season mind you so at least you do get a bit of time to have a drink before having to catch the gondola back down.
The hotel itself was alright, it's only advertised as a 2 star anyway. Bed was very comfortable although my room was absolutely titchy on the 3rd floor with a single bed, although some guests got a double bed in their room for no extra cost which seemed a bit unfair. The food was alright, but not that great for a ski hotel and you're looking forward to a good meal at the end of a hard day's skiing. One thing notably absent was a hot breakfast choice in the morning, plus there was no bread rolls to have with the cheese and ham etc. Also that week they seemed to have a lot of trouble with the hot water, for 4 of the 7 nights we were there the hot water would come and go while you were having a shower, there didn't appear to be enough hot water. Some hot chocolate would have been nice and definitely some decent vin chaud behind the bar not some stuff out of a packet.
Verdict-this hotel is probably alright and will do for a school ski trip, or if you're not particularly fussy about sitting on a gondola for an hour or more each day to ski up in Meribel. I wouldn't stop here again personally and if you're in a group or couple then you'd be better off stopping up in Meribel nearer the centre itself and the Rond Point where all the apres ski is for not a lot extra than what we paid. Generally I did leave feeling a bit disappointed to be honest although perhaps they did take the comments on board about the food being a bit inadequate because the review from March 2008 said the food was excellent, which is good if they made a change.
Avoid Meribel in February anyway if you can it is absolutely heaving because all the French have holidays in February. There is a little shack just down from the Brides Les Bains gondola that serves delicious vin chaud! Brides Les Bains itself is quite a nice little place with a few shops to have a look round and some restaurants. If you have a car then it's probably quicker to drive up to Meribel and park in the car park for 3E per day so someone else was telling me. Generally, though, nice and comfy bed and a quiet room was probably the best bit about this hotel.
