“Over-rated and Over-priced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

We booked this supposedly 4 star hotel to spend two nights there as part of a week's visit to the Camargue and Provence.

The hotel is easy to find, located just off the main road leading to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and it is situated just on the edge of an extensive marsh which is also home to clouds of mosquitoes and other insect life.

The car park is difficult to enter with a very tight 90 degree bend so you need to cake care and drive in very slowly.

Friendly reception staff showed us down a gloomy, uneven and smelly corridor, with a rag of a carpet, to our room which thankfully was clean and spacious. We brought in our own cases on a trolley provided. Disappointing service for a four star hotel.

We quickly realised that we were sharing our very expensive but nice room with a number of the resident mosquito community which sat on the ceiling and walls. Despite our best efforts to exterminate them, we woke next morning with lots of bites.

Our bedroom looked on to a rather unkept lawn and a number of overhanging trees and overgrown bushes around our window made the room dark and enclosed. Clearly, we had been allocated one of the poorer rooms in the establishment. Our inability to lock our sliding doors leading on to the lawn made us concerned about security matters as we were on the ground floor.

We did not eat in the hotel as the cost of the continental breakfast at 20 euro per person was extortionate in our view and and the dinner menu was equally pricey with a starter and main course totaling 55-60 euros per person before a dessert, wine and coffee were added. The hotel food may have been excellent but we ate very well for a fraction of the cost in small restaurants in the nearby town which was 5 minutes away by car.

For us this was not a good experience and we have no intention of revisiting the Mangio Fango
hotel. Thankfully the other 5 days of our holiday were lovely and we had really perfect places to stay.

Room Tip: Avoid room 3!

This was a last minute find, I called the night before to make a reservation. The room was beautiful with an extra sitting area with view on the marsh. The bed was very comfortable, and even adjustable if necessary. Dinner was a highlight, in a tastefully decorated main room. I had one of the best tart tatins ever. The heated pool and the hot tub increase the value of this place. Plus you can walk to the town from there.

Room Tip: Room 4 has a private garden

Thaïs hôtel impressed me with à confortable lux
Is that type of place where you get the best services while you're in pajama, half naked or wearing your most old broken tshirt .
Fells like a private property rented not like a hotel, you're free to take naked dipping in the sea in the middle of the night too or dance with your spouse in the nights silence, France is a place for romance and freedom but done with discretion.
Great deserts

This hotel is a real gem, a short way out of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Excellent setting with our large comfy room opening onto the garden. There was a pond outside with a resident heron! Everywhere was clean and attractively decorated. Outdoor pool was clean and warm, and the hot tub very pleasant. There is lots to do in the area, and we enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night. The evening meal was exquisite, so good we ate there twice, but had to have one day off coz there is an abundance of delicious food!. One slight criticism would be the price of the breakfast. Although again the food and choice was excellent, I'm not sure it was worth 20 Euros. Be sure to visit the bird park, just up the road, for an amazing array of flamingos, herons, waders etc. Easy to spend 4 hours there.

Room Tip: Rooms 5 and 6 overlook pond, and swimming pool

Freshly painted for the season and gleaming in the March sun. Having read the reviews we were given the quiet upstairs room overlooking the etang as we requested. Nicely appointed. Sufficiently spacious. Attractive table and chairs inside and what I liked best - the balcony where I sat with my morning tea overlooking the hotel's pond and the activities of the local bird population. An ideal spot too for watching the sun set along side a traditionally shaped guardien's house.

A good meal in the restaurant.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff - for example kindly speaking to the stables to ensure that my sunset beach ride was on a suitable horse as it was my first time.

Plenty to do with ornithological park packed with flamingos, boat rides, canoeing and many enjoyable activities.

Only drawbacks were mosquitoes feasting during the ride and the hair dryer being an old fashioned "huffy" one fixed to the wall.

But otherwise most enjoyable

Lovely rooms, very well appointed,
Heated pool, long enough to get a decent swim in, was just delightful especially at sunset with many birds flying overhead.
Very extensive breakfast, extremely civilised, though a little pricey.
Entrance tricky to spot by car, aim for the restaurant "alley" then the car park entrance is at the end on the right, at a right angle.
Hostellerie Pont-du-Gau was a great value meal alternative, the flamingos at the ornithological park there are a "must see", fabulous walk around the lagoons.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on upper level at rear overlooking the lagoon, has a nice balcony.

We are a family of four that had a big suite with a beautiful terass overlooking wetland with flamingos and other birds. We cant say weather our impression is applicable to the rooms. For sure its a big plus if you get a room with a balcony. Dinner/breakfast was excellent.
