“Great place to eat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

L'escalier was excellent , we re recommend by cassis. Hostel, and couldn't get in the first night, so booked for the next night. The lady owner speaks reasonable English and she and I think it was her daughter were really great . We had a really good night there and they made us very welcome. The food was beautiful, and I would recommend this place for sure, but book early, it's worth it

“Staff need to understand service is part of the overall dining experience.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

We've eaten at L'Escalier a number of times over the past 3 years, as a couple and with groups. The food is always good and there's a broad enough menu to cater for everyone. While we are patient and not in a hurry to eat, we'd expect some simple things like water or a menu in the first 20 minutes. Our French is not very good, but we really try to listen and engage in French as far as possible. This has never been a problem at other restaurants in Cassis and the staff are always happy to assist and are never rude or intolerant. Our waitress, the younger of the two working the night, seemed to think it was clever to speak to us in French so quickly we could not understand a word. When we courteously asked for an explanation she simply rolled her eyes and kept repeating the dishes in such a rapid pace even the locals felt it necessary to assist us with the interpretation. We know she can speak English and while we respect we are in her country and acknowledge French is the spoken language, a little help would have been appreciated. Some customers waited longer than us for service while others who arrived later were served and finished their meal before us and others. The great thing about Cassis is there are so many good restaurants. The great thing about being a paying customer is that you can choose whether to go back to a restaurant or not. There are better restaurants in Cassis than L'Escalier. At these restaurants you'll find staff who are helpful and courteous and even if they are having a bad day they are professional. We won't be back and suggest if you go to L'Escalier, bring some water for the wait, speak French fluently and avoid the younger waitress.

“L'Escalier de Cassis”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

The dining experience was very average, food v. Expensive for the quality, which equated to our local Auberge - ie. peasant quality but, prices to match! Wines are v. Expensive & house wines v. Poor - my advice, stay with those on the Harbour!

“Charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

This pretty little restaurant is down a side street off the harbour, and is worth finding. Our dinner was delicious, and indeed everything that came out of the kitchen looked both beautiful, and appetising: they seem to be putting more effort into their food than most, and making it more distinctive. Service was efficient and friendly: they had spilled over into a room on the ground floor of the house across the street, and the waitresses accomplished miracles hurrying back and forth between the two. Extra marks for the two very good looking chefs!

“Lovely Memories”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

I ate here every night when I was in Cassis and loved it. The food was fresh and beautiful and I'm still thinking about that raspberry mousse for dessert! The service was very friendly and prompt, and even though it was November and clearly not the busiest season in Cassis, there were people constantly coming in every night so it's a pretty popular place. I wish I could go there all the time!
