“O.K. - ish”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

My wife and I, late 60s, spent four nights here, twin room. Despite some most off-putting internet reviews it really wasn't too bad! Yes, rooms are cramped with little storage space. Decor pretty jaded but the rooms, bedding and ensuite were basically clean. Rated a a one-star hotel the prices are relatively cheap. Breakfast, for a modest extra sum, and from 6.30 a.m. onwards (for early onward travellers) was buffet style and ample - fresh croissants, baguettes and toast, with cereals, cheese, preserves, yogurts and quite good coffee. Reception manned throughout day by most obliging staff. Ample on site parking. Next to Ibis Hotel which offered good evening meals. Bus link round corner to central Calais.

We hope to try out the two or three-star Balladins hotels next time in France.

Room Tip: If you get lost trying to find hotel, as we did, ask for the Stade St Julien et Denis, the stadium...

What a absolute awful place it does not warrent the title HOTEL. The rooms were tiny and prison cell like, they were lacking in staff and when finding one they were very unhelpful and not friendly. Breakfast was poor quality cereal and bread and not worth 6 euros. The room walls were paper thin makin it very noisy sleeping in a zoo would of been more quieter.

Cheap and nasty. The whole place is in dire need of a revamp. Exterior facade is terrible and rooms were small and dirty with very little comfort. Staff were friendly but in short supply. it is in a quiet part of town but handy for the eurotunnel and ports. Find somewhere else if possible

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel

only booked due to lack of other accommodation in Calais for one night before we got the train back to the UK. Look for alternatives if possible as this is not a great place. It is in total need of a revamp. The exterior is shabby and the rooms were small, dirty, poorly equipped and not up to any kind of standard. The staff were friendly enough, although the receptionist/waiter for breakfast could barely grunt bonjour to us! Breakfast was basic. We were pleased to leave. Dont stay here - get an earlier crossing and find a travelodge near Folkestone!

This hotell looked derelict from the outside and did not get much better inside. Felt like a forgotten house that someone decided to start using as a hotel without cleaning it much. Carpets were stained, rooms small and not clean, stains on the walls and horrid bedcovers met us when stepping in to our room. Would not stay again and that goes for the whole of the Balladins chain as I assume their standards must be very low to keep a hotel like this running. Close to the ferry to Dover and free parking but that was the only good thing, and I am sure there a much better choices with these two benefits around.

The Balladins in Calais is a low cost basic hotel. There is a more expensive IBIS Hotel next door which we used for the bar and dinning facilities. The Balladins staff were very welcoming and were able to assist us with various queries. The room we stayed in was basic but clean. This hotel is ok for one night.

Stayed in this hotel for one night on our way home from a holiday in France. Ok for that purpose but wouldn't have liked to stay longer. The rooms were very old and shabby and when you looked out of the window, the building was in a kind of "U" shape with our room being the bottom part of the "U" and there were two other windows on either side. If you tried to, you could see into the adjacent bedrooms.

With the configuration of the rooms, anyone talking in neighbouring rooms could be heard quite clearly and a French couple were talking and laughing until about 2 in the morning, and although the bed was reasonably comfy, I barely slept all night.

Breakfast was a very limited buffet with just toast, croissants, yoghurt, etc. but quite adequate. Breakfast was not included in the room rate and was an extra 6 Euros per person.

If you have time to kill, I suggest walking into the town where there are a good range of restaurants as there is nowhere near the hotel to get a meal.
