“One of the best experiences in Europe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2005

The sight of Mont St Michel is truly magnificent when you approach from about 10 miles away. You can see the hill with the chapel on top from a distance, and as you get closer you also see the water.

For a moment, you begin to wonder how something of this magnitude is able to exist in the middle of the water. Later, you learn about the tides and how they allowed access to the Mont at specific times of the day. The tides also were a very critical part of the defense of the Mont during the 100 years war.

Upon entering the Mont, you begin to traverse a small avenue with shops and restaurants on both sides of the avenue. Many wonderful gifts can be found in these shops. The angle of the incline becomes a little steep as you continue up the avenue. Later you will learn that the top of the avenue is only about 1/3 of the height you will climb to reach the top of the Mont.

As you climb the series of steps up to the chapel, you think of the history of the Mont, and imagine yourself 500 years ago walking amongst the clergy there at the Mont.

Once you enter the chapel, it is truly breathtaking, the wonderful architecture that dates back 100s of years.

View is very breathtaking when you are at the top of the Mont. When we arrived, the tide was still low. However, by the time we reached the top, the tide had begun to come in.

If you are traveling to the Normandy region, make sure to take the time to stop at the Mont St Michel. You will not be disappointed.

“Night tours”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2003

We did an evening tour of Mont St. Michel and it was magical. Though you don't get to learn what each of the rooms were previously used for, you just get to absorb the atmosphere. They have special lights and music which add to the experience. There were not many people in the abbey which made it much more enjoyable to me.
