“Dirty, musty, rude”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 20, 2012

Dirty, dingy rooms. Smells of smoke. Strange people hanging around hotel staring. No shower curtain on the shower but could see where a rod had once been. No ac. Very few staff spoke English (it's a hotel). No safe. Front desk made us leave our "key" with them when we went out and all you had to do was say your room number to get it back. Don't leave valuables. Restaurant and bar that was connected had no English speaking staff and terrible service.

Normally we dont stop in town centres as we usually have expensive bikes on the car. no problem hotel has good secure parking. It's an old building but is being refurbished. We had a great double on 3rd floor with plenty of room. staff were very helpful but what made the stay was the restaurant. By mid evening the place was packed with locals, food was great as was service and atmosphere. highly reccomended.

The Grand has been a beautiful hotel in her day. She is being given a facelift . The staff are efficient and friendly. The beds comfortable and the rooms are clean. The room we stayed in was large suite over looking the station. Another lovely building. Although the room was due for a face lift the bathroom left nothing to be desired. Lots of hot water. The decore was very out of date but they are seeing to this. The real reason to stay at the Grand is their food.

Friendly staff at reception. The hotel is very old and this shows in the rooms that are very small with a strange odour. The double bed had seen better times and did not afford a comfortable nights sleep The free WI Fi did not work but as we were only there for one night this caused no inconvience. We traveled on a coach trip and had a set evening meal and breakast both were reasonable.
We would not stay here again

We went on a Christmas Market tour to Northern France and stayed 4 nights at Le Grand Hotel in Valenciennes. The rooms were small but clean. Nice bathroom with a few toiletries provided. Tea and coffee facilities in the room. TV in room but no English speaking channels. The breakfasts were continental - rolls, cheese, ham, croissants, jam etc., but the evening meals were excellent - 3 courses and different every day. France is very expensive now so the drinks cost more than we expected. Tip:- buy a bottle of wine, it works out cheaper than by the glass and it is cheaper than the beer!!

I never slept at the hôtel but had several (more than ten) opportunities to invite people either at the Brasserie Hans or at the restaurant gastronomique during the past 10 years.

I strongly recommend both restaurants, the choice between the Brasserie and the Resaurant Gastronomique as to be made under the 2 constraints of time and of course budget.

The thing I appreciate the most is that I never (yet) had a bad experience with those restaurants.

P.S: If you have time or especially want to satisfy the person(s) you are dining with, the Restaurant looks upper class compared to the Brasserie.
