“Beautiful house, room and host”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

From the hospitality Isabelle showed us to the grandeur of the house itself, the bedroom and the delicious breakfast, we couldn't ask for more. We had the Isabeau Chambre which is large, tastefully decorated, and has a king-size four-poster bed. Isabelle is warm and welcoming, speaks good English, and was very friendly and helpful (eg giving us a map of Roubaix). The views from the bedroom were beautiful, the bedroom and bathroom were clean and comfortable.Everything we needed was provided - a desk for our laptop, free wifi,flat-screen TV, shampoos, etc.

With Lille only 15 minutes away by metro, and La Piscine (amazing museum in an old swimming pool) just a walk away in Roubaix, it would be well worth staying here if visiting Lille. The area of Roubaix this B&B is in is very leafy and green, with the beautiful Parc Barbieux just down the road. I would highly recommend Au Paravent to anyone visiting Lille or Roubaix.

We stayed in the room named Isabeau de Roubaix.
Sorry to spoil the positive feast of previous reviews ( those that made us chose this place ).
Our experience there wasn't positive.
The pros first :
Very quite neighbourhood.
Walking distance to Metro station, about 600 m ( about 1970 feet or 655 yard ).
Free parking.
Large flat screen TV.

The problems:
-Impossible squeaky floor. Every time one of us had to go to bathroom at night, the loud squeaking waked the other.
-It's a Canopy bed with a very used mattress. The mattress totally sank and its edges remained higher around, so when a person lies on the back, his heels are higher than his knees. It makes his knees fold in the opposite and unnatural direction. I twisted my foot just by laying in that bed.
-The sink in bathroom has two separate faucets, meaning that it is impossible to mix cold and hot water, the only way to do that is to plug the sink and to fill it with water from both faucets. Does the owner really expect her guests to do that every time they want to wash their hands ?
The water at hot water faucet comes from the heating system, so it was almost boiling, we couldn't even touch it. The water at cold water faucet was very cold, but we used it because we had no choice.
-The sink and tub are from the sixties at best. The sink is full of scratches and stains where coating is removed.
-There were no glasses for tooth brushing in bathroom. In the room there were two wine glasses, having no choice - we used them for tooth brushing.
-There is no place to put personal items in bathroom, there is only one short and narrow shelf under the mirror above sink. No place to put toiletries bag.
-TV is located in one of the closets, but not in front of bed, so one of the Canopy bed pillars is always in the middle of screen when watching from bed.
-Blackout curtains do not blackout room because they are too narrow.
-There is a huge crack in ceiling right above the bed, it's not a pleasant feeling to sleep there.
-The most important and dangerous problem is the shower. Shower enclosure is small and faucet handle is located in such a way that it's prominent. As I mentioned before, hot water comes from heating system and it's almost boiling. If you are not careful enough, while taking a shower you can move the handle to it's hot position and a boiling water jet can cause you a very severe burn. It almost happened to me and I warned my spouse. This is real negligence and irresponsibility, temperature controlled faucets are basic in cases like these and can be bought in any plumbing store.
-Our room has not been cleaned even once during our staying. Towels were changed after two nights, but not all of them, the two towels on the floor in front of toilet and shower were not changed.

We didn't enjoy our staying at that B&B and do not recommend it, of course.

This is a very nice bed and breakfast where no detail is overlooked. Coffee making facilities that make real coffee; remarkable jams for breakfast; amazing bedrooms; off-street parking; wonderful decoration and furnishings; an extremely friendly hostess who will help with anything. As long as you do not need to be in the centre of Lille it is worth staying at this place - much better than any hotel in France with several stars.

After 1 day @ AuParavent, I didn't want to leave. Isabelle is a special person, very kind and welcoming, with a strong good taste for beautiful things and details. Inside, her property looks like one of those "palaces" always described in fairytales. At the time I visited, the Watteau room didn't exist yet, so I stayed in the Viviane Romance's room. I have to say I saw a lot of 5 stars hotel, but this was way beyond that....this is one of a kind little work of art! To complete the perfect night I spent (in the double-double king bed), Isabelle prepared a wonderful breakfast, featuring special home-made jams (...with gold!!), croissants and "salad de fraises". Hope to be back veeeery soon!

The purpose of my stay was to visit a relative critically ill in a nearby hospital. In those circumstances, I greatly apreciated the warmth of the welcome I received Au Paravent. The grand old town house is situated in a quiet street, a 2 minute walk away from a bus and tram stop, the nearest metro is 3 minutes away.
The scale of the house, the stylish way it is decorated are pure luxury. But however glamorous the environment may be , a deeper sense of luxury lied in the way I felt welcome here. The fresh rose in the room, the delicious breakfast reflected on the hosts' attitude: willingness to make my stay as enjoyable as possible in a simple, unpretentious manner.
These are only snippets of what you can expect from your stay at Au Paravent , where even the house cat seemed delighted that I graced her home with my presence...
