“A Paradox in Cambrai”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Le Mouton Blanc for the weekend as we wanted a centrally located hotel and were hooked by the positive review about this hotel's restaurant. We both love French cuisine and we weren't disappointed. We chose to eat in the lovely dining room on both nights and the food and service are excellent.

Unfortunately the hotel doesn't match its restaurant for quality or value for money. While the hotel is well located, its rooms are very dated and lack basic conveniences such as a hair dryer. The French breakfast is typical, and includes a croissant, jam and bread, plus cereal, fruit and cheese; however these were all very low quality (i.e. stale bread, 'plastic' cheese, and even mouldy fruit) and as such is hardly worth the price (8 EUR per person). After staying in some lovely hotels in France for comparitive prices, we felt Le Mouton Blanc was over priced and under delivered.

If you are just passing through Cambrai the hotel may be of convenience, and the restaurant is certainly worth a visit, however do take the time to consider other options before settling on Le Mouton Blanc.

The best thing about this hotel is definitely the food. The breakfast is French - bread, croissants, jam, fruit, yogurt, and tea or coffee, but it is generous and all of excellent quality. But it is the hotel restaurant which in my opinion should DEFINITELY be considered a destination. The food is just amazing. I think it could easily get a Michelin star, and probably should have one. There is no menu - they come to your table and tell you what they're proposing for the night, and I guess you can take it or leave it. Though my French is excellent I didn't understand the menu that the lovely hotel manager rattled off, but it turned out to be: an exquisitely delicious shellfish bisque with accents of vermicelli-thin slices of sweet carrot and onion, a pot-au-feu of beef, served with perfectly prepared root vegetables and a sauce that I think was demiglace that had been monte-au-beurre, then had a spoon of cream and paprika stirred in (it was amazing, I sopped up every single bit of it with the delicious fresh, hot, crusty roll that came with dinner), and a deliciously refreshing and light dessert of ice-cream that had been softened, then had Turkish delight and whipped cream folded in - so the ice cream was light, fluffy, with little bits of praline and candied orange peel and nougat in it - and plated with a berry coulis and slices of perfectly ripe fresh fruit. Everything was pure perfection.

The restaurant at the Mouton Blanc is definitely a hidden gem, an undiscovered treasure. Cambrai is, similarly, a charming town with a surprisingly rich selection of things to do and see. I would encourage anyone who will be in the Pas-de-Calais or Lille area to stay at Le Mouton Blanc. Though the rooms have no particular distinction, they are comfy enough (and my room had a very nice newly renovated bathroom, a marvelously comfortable bed, and a huge flat screen plasma TV) - and the exquisite food that some undiscovered genius is whipping up in the kitchen is worth the trip alone.

P.S. Unlimited free WiFi!
