Upon arrival, We met the receptionist who was extremely helpful and courteous.
After our evening in Arras, we returned to enjoy the Whisky, wines and cocktails that they requested we try in their hotel information pack.
After searching for a member of staff to serve us, finally one popped up and managed to serve us some drinks. The lonely two chairs in the bar area should have rang our alarm bells.
Sadly upon requesting a second drink, we searched the building in vain for a member of staff only to be greeted by a gent who wasn't sure what his role was( or who he was for that matter)
We asked for a glass of Champagne and a glass of Red wine(asked for in French), but sadly after their attempts to drain Champagne from what was obviously a beer tap, we were presented with a glass of "FROTH" only to be told that they were not sure if this was what we had ordered and to try it( You can imagine the look on our faces). We declined requesting another glass of Red wine instead of the "Cremant du Froth" only to see him tip the froth away, wash the glass under the tap and serve us with a champagne glass of "red wine".
I believe that when hotels employ staff, training is paramount and in this case, Champagne being one of France's specialities, to be presented with " Un verre de froth" was a total insult.
We did laugh at the fact we were also asked our room number, in order to charge it to our room.
If it was down to me, I would have leapt behind the bar, but I'm too respectful for that.
Still, even to the untrained eye, a beer pump is highly unlikely to produce any champagne.
There was no air conditioning in our room, so our windows had to be opened. Ah, "the Bells", every 15 minutes and on the hour, a full 12 inch remix of last week's hot Cathedral hit.
We opted for breakfast in our room between 9.30 and 10.00am only to be delivered around 9.05am.
I was presented with a tray where the coffee had obviously been spilt.
Thankfully it had because it took the enamel off my teeth.
The espresso was no better, evoking the look of an undrugged dental patient upon my partners face.
On the plus side, the bathroom is clean, and the location is great.
I hate giving bad reviews, but with such promise as the hotel has, they need to review people's feedback.
If I was the manager, I'd close down for a week and train the staff, or at least put someone behind the bar that knows the difference between beer and Champagne.
It really helps to have this knowledge under your belt working behind a bar.
Thank god we didn't order a Bloody Mary. The Gendamerie would have been around in a flash.
