When I started looking for somewhere for four cyclists and their bikes to stay over the weekend that the Tour de France passed through Luchon, I was quickly running out of options as place were getting booked up. I stumbled across Pavillon Sevigne and quickly booked it, more out of desperation than design. However, my fears of it being a second tier option were totally unfounded. If I had the option again I would book it above all other places.
Pavillon Sevigne was undoubtedly a massive reason why our cycling break was such a success. Catherine and Jean-Luc welcomed us into their beautiful home and immediately set about making us feel at home. We had asked in advance that we needed two rooms with single beds and she had happily re-arranged here rooms to suit our needs. The house itself was almost exactly what you expect of a french chateau - spacious, airy and light with fantastic period detail. The bathrooms varied in size by room but they were absolutely fine.
The fact we were four men with bicycles would have been a problem for many other hosts but she found us safe storage at the side of the house and did not mind at all when we were repairing our bikes in the yard - the fact that they have so much outside space is a real plus too. The house is right on the edge of the town but only 5 mins walk to the main street, and you can get straight out into stunning countryside and for cyclists, straight out onto some famous climbs (Col du Peyresourde, Superbagnerres etc).
The breakfasts were fantastic, with cereals, fruit and freshly-made brioches every morning accompanied by a constant flow of coffee - just what is needed before a day on a bike.
What makes this place special is the relaxed atmosphere - you are made to feel immediately as if this is your home - our hosts couldn't do enough to help us make the most of our stay - restaurant recommendations etc. and although our french was very poor, our hosts made every effort to help us in english.
If you remember that this is a guest house not a hotel and give it the appropriate respect and frame of mind you will undoubtedly enjoy your stay more. I will be coming back again I hope.
