“Surprising and different”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2014

We made our way to St Denis on recommendation from a local Parisienne. the actual approac is very unimpressive but once inside it is awesome. It was Easter Sunday and so the local tour guides weren't on duty but we used an audioguide. We loved the fact that there was so much to see and explore. The tombs, statues and vaults and the history of the basilica is well worth the visit. There are so many churches and cathedrals in Paris and indeed European cities but this one is well worth the visit. Maybe because it is on the outskirts of Paris, there are not hordes of tourists and definitely no long queues. It is a highly recommended visit.

“Ah scaffolding.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014 via mobile

The entire front of the church is covered for cleaning. That is really OK because you go for the tombs not the cathedral. The tombs of Clovis, Charles Martel, Dagobert, Henri II, Catherine de Medici, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and their son's heart. Great legend of Saint Denis and great collection of Kings of France.

“In the shadow of Notre Dame”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014

Wow! What a pity there are not more visitors to this beautiful cathedral. Very interesting as it is as well the resting places of all the kings of France. The 'gisants' carved in stone are really interesting. It's a place that well deserves a visit. You will find not only a lot of very interesting history within these walls, but as well a sense of peace not found anymore in Notre Dame, which has lost its charm with far too many tourists. In June there is the festival of music with numerous concerts. Do make the detour, well worth it. Enjoy!

“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2014

The Basilica St Denis is a little off the beaten track but it's definitely worth it. The area is a little run down but the basilica interior is far superior to that of Notre Dame and the royal necropolis is very interesting.
