“ok hotel, bad area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2010

STAFF were very friendly and extremely helpfull. they helped my friend who had met us there and was a little lost.
ROOM was very basic, quite small but us 5 girls coped very well. The beddin was not that clean (hairs in the bed), but was ok for how cheap the hotel/ hostel is. It was a little noisey but nothin that wasnt expected. The shower was lovely and warm and the room had nice clean towels and good big mirrors.
THE AREA...saint denis is a little rough, we were a little scared, specially at nighttime walking to the metro to go into the main part of Paris for a meal. and the metro's were quite bad for a few stops, but the closer in to Paris central the better this got.
Its very far out of the main town but right on a metro route and u will pay over double to stay close to central paris.
I think this hotel is fine for a cheap and cheerful deal and for mix groups/ males, but for a group of just girls it was a little scary (just the area) i would definately stay in the hotel again, if the area was better. Just get a taxi back at night, it only cost us 10euro each from st Michel, which is several metro stops away, and we felt a lot safer this way.

The Advert
The advertising said that it was on the banks of the Seine. Well it is, only almost 10 kilometres outside what most of us tourists know as Paris. This is not our first trip to Paris. It was also situated in the middle of a vast light industrial estate and a kilometre from the nearest Metro.

The Hotel.
On Monday evening we came back to the hotel early. We asked if the dining room was open. No.
Where is the nearest place to eat? At the Metro. My wife was tired and is diabetic. OK, so I’ll have to go the 2 clicks to get a take-away.
Can we get any food delivered? No.
We ordered drinks at reception and sat in the foyer. Imagine our surprise when a pizza delivery arrives for one of the receptionist’s cronies who are watching TV with him! We grabbed the opportunity and ordered pizzas for ourselves on the spot.
I am less than happy with the surly receptionist who went out off his way to make life difficult for us.
A couple of other residents came in and joined us for drinks. The lady ordered red wine. There is none! - In Paris?

Then a party started at 2.00am in the room next door. I gave it half an hour to see if they would settle down. They didn't. I went to have a word. Half an hour later I went to the receptionist who grudgingly phoned them.

Do not stay here - ever.

No dining facilities despite what the adverts say. Breakfast times change to suit them without any notice. The chambermaid service is crap, the reception service crap - they need to reset your key-card every day. The location is crap. The Seine at the level that the hotel is smells like crap.

Do not stay here - ever.

It was our second visit in Paris, so my friend and I have plotted out a list of must-see's takin off from our last Paris holiday. We didn't care much about accommodations as we intendED to explore Paris all day and just need a place to sleep.

Our first night should've been video-ed, with the Psycho theme as music bed. Saint Denis itself doesn't look too bad. It was rural but quiet, with a small-town feel (although a French friend would later on tell us that the scary-lookin streets of Clichy are actually safer than Saint Denis). But SOVEREIGN HOTEL was the HOTEL FROM HELL!

It looked like a comfort inn more than anythin. We arrived past midnight and there were youths outside their rooms, DRUNK, laughin and talkin noisily, and a fight even ensued while our luggages were being brought up. They were practically throwin bottles at each other!!!

The guy who assisted us very well had to!! the elevator was not functioning and we were given a room on the 4th floor!!!!

And no, the worst is not over. The guy opened the door to a room that hasn't been cleaned up yet. In lieu of apologizing, he grabbed the phone and yelled at someone to come up. He disappeared without a word and later on showed us to another room... the main dor of which could not be closed properly.

And with the crazy crowd outside?? my friend dozed off from fatigue but I had to lean our heavy luggages against the door to ensure nobody breaks in as we snooze

I COMPLAINED TO OUR TRAVEL AGENT BACK HOME AND DEMANDED A DIFFERENT HOTEL. WE WERE TRANSFERRED TO TIM REGINA HOTEL AT BOIS DE BOULOGNE (OH IT WAS A CHARMING HOTEL, A FEW STEPS FROM THE METRO. BUT WE HAD TO BE TRANSFERRED TO KYRIAD IN CLICHY (WHICH WAS OK TOO :-)) BECAUSE WE HAD NO PRIOR RESERVATIOINS

WORD OF ADVICE? GO FOR CHAIN HOTELS

Endured this hotel last weekend for one night. Despite having a 'confirmed' reservation, staff could not find my reservation on their systems. They then allocated us a double room (advertised at the check-in desk at €85) despite the fact that I had paid for a large 4 bed room costing €120 and this was clearly stated on the booking confirmation that I showed them. When I went back to reception to rectify this, they handed me the keycard for the 4 bed room that I had originally paid for without any eye-contact, explanation or apology. I got the distinct impression that they had 'tried it on'. Having seen the double room and the 4-bed 'suite' (their description - not mine!), my impressions are not just based on one non-representative room. Both rooms were equally awful. The double room was tiny. It had 2 single beds in it which covered 90% of the floorspace. It was so small that it reminded me of a sleeping compartment on a ferry. The quadruple room was about the size of a normal double room and had a double sofa bed and not 4 beds.
The rooms are gloomy having one small window opening out onto a walkway overlooking an internal courtyard. The floor of our room was covered in mismatched, badly stained, sticky and smelly carpet tiles. The bed covers were ripped and stained (and not lightly stained!). Light fittings were broken, curtains ripped, furniture generally bashed and broken, walls dented and marked. You get the picture. We did not dare walk on the floor in our bare feet and slept between the sheets having removed the filthy bedcovers. The extractor fan from the bathroom was taped shut and meant that the bathroom was completely unventilated and an ideal growing environment for mould. The fact that it was taped shut (and appeared to have been taped shut for quite some time) showed that there is a zero maintenance budget on this hotel and no understanding of the health implications of mouldy bedrooms. The room smelled of a mixture of mould and stale cigarette smoke. We stay in hotels a lot and understand the concept of getting what you pay for and if this hotel was €40 I wouldn't have minded the bad attitude, the run-down area and a bit of general shabbyness - but this was the most disgusting hotel that we have ever encountered. Even the worst youth hostel that we have ever stayed in was streets ahead of this. We stay in hotels, motels and hostels a lot and have never been moved to write a review. But I feel that potential victims need to be warned about this place. Was there a good point? The reception area looked well maintained. Shame that they have never spent any money on the remainder of the hotel since it was built. Any other good points? None. Avoid.

We were on a coaching holiday over the Easter period.Stayed 2 nights but ate once in the Hotel. We were also warned by the driver to to keep our bags under our coates on exiting the coach and were welcomed and our luggage surrounded by the driver and two members of the hotel staff. Not the best way to start a first visit to Paris.

The rooms were in need of some TLC.The carpets were dirty but the bedding was clean. Didn't dare inspect the mattresses!!No problem with any cockroches etc as previously stated.

The food was OK and the service from the staff was good.

St Denis is a run down area.It all looks as though it needs a large injection of finance.I wouldn't venture outside alone.

The first evening we were taken to a show and a meal but the 2nd we ate in the hotel and we did notice some youths trying to get access. These were dealt with efficiently and quietly by the hotel staff.

We still enjoyed our Paris experience and the Hotel problems were duly reported to our tour company.Who are taking this forward

We stayed 2 nights and ate at the hotel just once, thank goodness. St Denis is a run down industrial area on the outskirts of Paris. On a good quiet day you can get to the centre of Paris in 20 mins. We managed it on the tour coach but would not concider public transport though the bus stands are literally outside the main entrance of the Hotel.

On arriving our driver warned us to keep our bags close as thieves operate in the area. An employee of the hotel circled the bus as we entered the hotel looking out for suspicious characters. Again on our departure he was there, eyes pealed for miscreants!!

We were given key cards which had been sellotaped together and then told where our rooms were. The room smelt awful though the bathroom.and beds were clean. We slept ok - it had been a long journey and felt safe in the knowledge that by wedging the chair up against the front door noone could get in.

I would NOT recomend this hotel to anyone. Fortunately for us the tour guide ensured that we spent as little time on the premises as possible and we still thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.

The price for a Suite was €180 - an absolute joke.
