“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2014

Booked and paid extra for a Privilege Room. Stayed at other Mercures and have always been very happy with the extra facilities that this room rate offers. We did not get all the extras that this rate gives and we were not given a room with the Privelege sign on the door so it was probably not the correct room. Service in the restaurant was dreadful as there was a large party in a private adjoining room and the waiting staff was shared with this. Certainly too few members of staff to give any kind of service.

We needed a hotel at Macon for an overnight stay on our way south and chose the Mercure, as it seemed quietly situated. I understand that all bedrooms have been renovated since the Accor group took over the hotel. Our room was very comfortable, with a large and extremely comfortable bed and was on the second floor with a view of the river - in fact we mainly had a view of trees, and it was the same from the fourth floor, a fellow guest told me. River views are probably better in winter, when trees have lost their leaves. It was a pleasant view and there was little noise from the road between the hotel and the river.

Our room was a reasonable size, very clean and comfortable, and the kettle was a bonus. We used room service, as we'd eaten a large lunch; the croque monsieur was tasty and piping hot, and was accompanied by a good salad and a bread roll and the red wine was also good.

After a very good night's sleep, we were down for breakfast fairly early. We chose a table close to the window, and helped ourselves to breakfast; good coffee, the fruit was only orange slices - not as good a choice of fruit salad as in other visits to Accor hotels, orange juice was good.

Staff were helpful and pleasant, and our whole visit was positive. Secure parking in the large car park was a plus for us. Our first view of the hotel was of an ugly building - it would be a good move if the outside could be improved; even a coat of paint might help. The hotel was let down by the dreadful carpet in the dining room - the colours are far too bright and the many dirty stains on it were awful. I'm hoping that the dining room hasn't yet had a face-lift, and that a future visit will show a new carpet more suitable for the room.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the river have pleasant views.

There was a nasty bug-fulled cobweb. The window frame was filled with dirt and bugs. I don't think the headboard had been dusted in months. Very small room. Good AC. I read the other reviews and was surprised how good their experience; we were on a Cosmos tour, maybe they keep those rooms at a lower standard.

We stayed here as a stop over for one night on our way back from a cycle trip down south. The staff were very helpful and securely stored our bikes in a locked room. Our room was well decorated and clean.
The supper menu was simple but the food was delicious. The breakfast selection was good.

At the end of a tour of France, it was a delight to finish up at this hotel. The setting was beautiful, (on the water), and the rooms were beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean and provided absolutely everything that could be required. Breakfast was good.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the water

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2014

Our room on the third floor, with enhanced facilities, appeared to have been recently refurbished and was beautiful, probably the best Mercure we have stayed in. Room had a safe, free mini bar (soft drinks), bath robes, comfortable bed, good sized bathroom and adjustable stork reading lamps. The beautifully decorated curtains covered a wall of windows that slid open onto a great view of the River and the parkland and walks alongside it. Private car park and they accepted our pet dog. Staff were friendly, although rather thin on the ground. The evening meal menu promised a good meal, but reality was different. The soup starter was not as described by the waiter, the "beef" steak was as tough as they come and required hard work with a non steak knife and serious chewing, it was accompanied with luke potato wedges and the chocolate mouse desert was more air than mouse and tasteless. My wife's ice cream was coated in cold chocolate sauce when the menu said it was hot sauce. Glasses of wine were small and expensive. The breakfast selection was good with hot food (sausage, egg and bacon) as well as normal continental items. The overall cost was high (not as high as Sydney Airport Mercure) with only the evening meal preventing us giving it 5 stars. If we stay again we would eat our evening meal at the riverside restaurant a few hundred meters along the river bank.

Room Tip: book a higher level floor facing the river and if you can afford it pay for best grade room
