“Fine rural haute cuisine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

This is a restaurant not to miss if you are within 100 miles from it and you really are into fine dining. This is a haute cuisine auberge (inn) located in an idyllic setting in a renovated barn/ farm house. It is a family affaire that is roughly 10 years old.

The hostess is charming and will make you feel welcome right away. The inside setting is cosy rural France, with solid furniture and in a solid building with lovely and charming little touches to make you feel welcome and comfortable.

The menu is beautiful, with lamb, duck, beautiful starters and lovely deserts. They also offer a kids' menu that is lovely - not your usual chicken nuggets and fries - so our 5 year-old had a lovely dining experience too.

We were a party of 5, including our little one. One of us chose the surprise menu - so did not know what to expect at all. It turned out to be: starter: salad and cold beef, main: lamb, and an exquisite creme brulee for desert. And, as a 'thank you' for choosing the surprise menu, a glass of champagne! We were impressed, and even more so when we were told that, if all of us had chosen the surprise menu, we would all have gotten different things. The hostess has a knack of guessing what people are likely to want to eat and reports back to the chef and, hey presto there's your surprise menu!

Those of us who were not brave enough to go with the surprise menu had different starters, I had an exquisite salad and the lamb with creamed garlic. Can't remember what the others had, but it looked amazing. For desert we all went for the 'fine tarte aux pommes' and it was a delight.

The wine was also beautiful and the cheese cart was generous and full of local cheeses and the hostess was indeed very knowledgeable. Our little one was delighted with the choice of goat's cheese.

In a nutshell, this is a high end cuisine, served in a lovely manner, in lovely surroundings and with very high professionalism. Be sure to book in advanced as this place gets booked weeks in advance.

We are already planning our next visit!

“Went back the next day, THAT good and not expensive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Being tired of the tourists menu restaurants mainly held in that Bourbon region by Dutch people, we asked local people for a good local restaurant and we had a wonderful culinary experience at the CHUCAL. That good we wanted to come back, but they were fully booked. The nex day they phoned us to tell us that someone called off and we went a 2nd time, to again enjoy superb and local food, in this charming old but totaly renewed farm. Not only a top meal, but a very nice place with a lot of room between the table. The "surprize-me" menu gave all 6 of us for each course a DIFFERENT dish. If we would be in the region we would drive 50 miles to go back. They also do B&B and are located in a very small and quite litte village.
