“Fawlty Towers in the Auvergne?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2012

After making an internet reservation several months ago and receiving confirmation from the hotel, we found that we were not listed as guests for our 2 nights stay when we arrived.
However, rooms were available and we had a roof over our heads.
The hotel has a nice position and great potential, however, the lady in the role of Basil Fawlty used every opportunity to make us unwelcome guests. For example, when ordering a bottle of mineral water we were told to wait a minute and after a couple of days of this abrupt treatment we began to understand why the guests in the TV series became so apprehensive about asking for anything at the hotel.
In addition to the comments already made by other visitors, we found the bedroom carpet badly stained, no replacement of used disposable water glasses, instant coffee (instead of instant cafe au lait) for a 10 euro breakfast with very little choice, a fridge housing yougurts at 10 degrees centigrade, etc
Upon settling a bill listing 3 instead of the 2 bottles of mineral water obtained we found the lady Basil Fawlty basically accusing us of not paying for what we had had.
In the end, we spent as little time as possible at the hotel and intend not to return there,

The service was really bad, they really try their best to make you unwelcome. Also be advised that when you arrive, there is a huge staircase and it is impossible for people with walking disability to stay at this hotel. They don't offer any help and would rather chat, but most importantly they almost try to avoid giving you useful information, such as where you can find a parking or what is the access code for the door, which is needed if you plan to go out of the hotel in the evening. Other inconveniences include: room is small, no proper shower curtain, little bathroom amenities (no kleenex for example, tiny shampoo pouch), beds and pillows very uncomfortable, the toilet paper rolls are inconveniently secured, no in-room safe, no minibar, no ironing board, no notepad or pen, only one towel per guest. Shower is a bathtub with a flexible shower head, and there isn't any hook for the head (neither or side nor ceiling), and the water pressure is extremely low. And upon checkout: they had put by default the breakfast on the bill (which we hadn't taken).

Room Tip: There is a free public parking on the street above the hotel. And make sure to ask for the access co...

We booked a "comfort" room through bookings.com. The comfort rooms are €88 as opposed to a normal room at €68. Comfort rooms are supposed to have a view over the town, a bathtub, and larger bed.

The hotel has a great location just up a small hill overlooking the town, and a very welcoming facade with a terrace. The town itself is spa town, and a picture of fading Victorian grandure which I rather like!

We were given a room with no view and a shower - clearly a normal room. We were changed to a different room on the top floor. This room was supposedly a comfort room, but there was still no bathtub, and we were in the eaves (low ceiling on one side) with a small window (although the view was nice). The room was small, with only a standard double, and a very small TV. It felt more like a two star room than a three star, which is surprising because this hotel is part of the "Logis de France" group and they are normally pretty good.

The bathroom was also small, but nicely decorated. The shower did not have much pressure and was a little awkward to get in and out of (larger people would struggle). Both the room and the bathroom were clean.

The WiFi did not work, which was very annoying. I think that hotels should give you a discount if somthing they advertise is not available!

The bed was comfortable, but as I find so often in hotels, the pillows were the most basic rubbery type which are not very welcoming. Strangely it was clothed in sheets and blankets rather than a duvet, but I slept OK (although my better half did not). It was certainly very peaceful and quiet - we slept with the window open.

I would have rated this hotel more highly if the rooms were less expensive. Although we will probably return to Chatel-Guyon, we will not be staying here again.

Room Tip: Get a comfort room and avoid the top (4th) floor.
