“True medieval style B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2009

This was our first stay in a B&B and we were very delighted with it.

We were first referred this accommodation through the local taxi driver (Phillipe). At the time of booking we could only go by reviews on the internet so we were a bit unsure of the place but we were definitely not disappointed.

We stayed in the 4-bedroom ground floor room. The host was kind enough to fetch us from Sarlat train station upon arrival (which was definitely above our expectations). I describe our accommodation as 'truly medieval' with four-poster beds, simple furnishings and a very pretty garden. All in all, I felt like I had walked into another timezone! We're not sure if it was just a little dusty in our room or weather it was the Spring season but we did have a tad of trouble with our allergies playing up, however the overall experience overpassed this. I have to say that the breakfast provided was the BEST one we had the whole trip and we were travelling 5 countries in Europe at the time. Fantastic breakfast! Best croissants, hot breads and jams!

Loves- The breakfast, the amazing value for what you get from this place, the central location of the accommodation. Definitely would recommend it to anyone passing through this area.

We stayed in the cottage and were more than pleased with everything! The owners are extremely helpful and friendly. The cottage was very private while being a five minute walk from the main square. This made it cool and comfortable even the end of June. All appliances where available in the cottage and the kitchen was very well supplied. The lawn and and picnic set outdoors made it our favorite place to eat while looking down on the town. Pierre-Henri has put together excellent tour guides and local resources that are worthy of a travel service. Being a local he is very knowlegable about the area. If you have a car this is the best place to be with your own private parking. We would return there in a heartbeat if in the area. Thank you Pierre-Henri for making our trip to Sarlat and the Dordogne an excellent experience!

We have been repeat visitors to this place. After reading the one negative review here, I felt an urge to comment. On one trip to Sarlat, we arrived much later than expected. Instead of waking the Toulemon family at the late hour, we stopped instead at a Best Western Hotel. That cost almost 3 times what we paid at Toulemon's B&B and was a tiny room with a poor quality bed. Next morning, we moved to the B&B and Pierre even offered us breakfast. When we checked out, he didn't want to charge us for the missed night but the value was so good, we insisted on paying. He would only accept 20 euros despite the fact he held the room for us and could have rented to someone else.

Financially, this was beyond reasonable. Additionally, the room was spotless and the bathroom modern and of high standard. We could open the room to look out on the town square. The old town was busy with people but still quiet and charming. There are many fine restaurants within a 5 minute walk. Pierre will help you choose destinations in the surrounding area, one that I find among the most beautiful anywhere.

Don't stop at Toulemon if you want luxury and pampering. It is perfect if you want a simple, clean, friendly place to stay with great value. Enjoy Sarlat but leave time to explore the beautiful country nearby.

I loved this place, both the room and the town. The room is in a guest house owned by Pierre. It's so much more charming than a typical hotel. Pierre is very nice, speaks English, and is more than happy to tell you about the area and give advice on what to see. He also provides several books on the area, most in French but a couple were in English, and you are welcome to borrow them for a day. My room was huge and could've held at least four. They also have a small table in the room which is a nice convenience. It's a lovely space with a small entry that has a console table for stuff and a place to hang a coat. The bath is clean (it's a bathroom- not too exciting).

The property is so close to the center of Sarlat, which is a wonderful town. Big enough that there is plenty to don't venture out to all the things to see in the region, but small enough that you can walk everywhere. The only concern would be for people with mobility issues as steps are everywhere. Pierre showed me around the house, which includes a patio with some tables that you could eat at after hitting the market, and he shows off part of the original wall that once surrounded Sarlat, along with what's left of steps up to the top.

Since it is a guest house rather than hotel, don't expect maid service and fresh towels every day, but since I don't demand that my bed be made at all times, this wasn't a concern for me. If I had needed anything, I'm sure Pierre would've helped out. Breakfast is typical French (bread, jam, coffee or tea) and is extra to the room costs. Given the cost of this place compared to other places I stayed in France, it was a bargain and I'd love to go back!

inkacola is exactly correct. We obviously stayed in the same room. Superb location approx. 30metres from the town square. M. Toulemon is a real gentleman, has an excellent knowledge of the Perigord region, has written itineraries for guests to use and provides the best croissants we tasted in all of France. The room was large, light and airy, modern bathroom, very reasonable tariff, and did I mention the breakfasts? Don't miss market days (Wed. and Sat.). Excellent value for money. Neither of us wanted to leave Sarlat - one week just wasn't long enough.

Having never stayed in a Chambre d'Hotes, we were a bit nervous --but what a pleasant surprise! La Maison du Notaire Royal is a wonderfully atmospheric old mansion in the center of Sarlat. We had an enormous room, with a comfortable bed, good reading lights, a table and chairs, and a balcony overlooking the main square (Saturday market) --no tv nor phone in the room but we never missed them. We also had our own large, modern bathroom. The price and location are unbeatable, by far the best value for money I've encountered in France. The owners are very friendly and helpful, yet they give you plenty of space to do your own thing. They have a reference library with as much information on the areas' attractions as the tourist office. There's plenty of free parking on the street behind. We felt very welcome and safe, and ended up staying five nights since Sarlat is an excellent base to explore the Perigord Noir. Highly recommended.

After the last review had my doubts but totally unfounded, am wondering if it was same place but the comment about aircon confirmed the nationality.

If you want an amorphous, bland, airconditioned hotel room just like the one you get back home (and don't have to worry about those pesky non-English speaking foreigners) don't come here. But if you want a real old, luxurious, comfortable and authentic experience within the old city walls this is the place.

After a number of fairly nice hotels thought we should try a Chambre D'Hote and am I glad we did.

The advantages were, huge room, well decorated and just like staying in an old mansion. Very friendly owner, told us all the towns history, and the price, 40 Eur per night for a couple and 16 more for our two teenagers. At this price we had the breakfast and still the same price as for a 2* hotel but get 4 star living! And parking was free, a very good add-on for Sarlat where parking is very expensive. Just off the market square (about a 30 second walk) in a very picturesque building, and did I mention in the old town.

This did make it a bit hard to find as out GPS wanted to drive through the old town. But in reality it's right by the city wall as well as being close to the centre of the old town (because peculiarly the centre of town isn't in the centre).

Great town, so much to do in the area. Heartily reccomend the market but so much to see in the surrounding area too.

Try this place well worth it, can''t believe it is not better recommended!

Have fun!
