We spent 5 nights in La Laterne and would have no hesitations whatsoever in recommending this jewel of a B&B in the heart of Sarlat. Run with all their heart - and it shows! - by owners Terri and Roy it is right in the town centre and one feels "at home" immediately. We loved the little garden and the early evening drinks served there to sip with the other couples staying there and to exchange the days travelling experiences. The lovingly prepared breakfasts have to be experienced to appreciate: it's as if you were in a luxurious manor and the kitchen staff had prepared your breakfast with incredible attention to detail and preparation of each dish - from the varied fresh fruit garnishes on the cut up melon to the home made jams and fresh fresh baguette and croissants etc. etc.
Roy's dry sense of humour as he sits with his cup of coffee in the breakfast room, only joining in a conversation if he feels it's "right", adds an additional and truly delightful - not to mention often educational - "taste" to the breakfast.Terri is always on hand for invaluable advice about where to eat, where to shop and where to go be it locally or further afield!! Being used to self limitation in Hotel outrageously priced mini bars in the room, we especially liked the Lanterne's "EUR 1 frig system" i.e. whatever took your fancy in the frig in the hallway you simply helped yourself to and just put EUR 1 in the kitty!
I'm not going to spoil the surprise and reveal who the in-house opera singer is but will just say that "he" too was another delightful element which contributed to making our stay at La Lanterne truly memorable and we would not hesitate to recommend it as a most welcoming and warm "base" for touring this most beautiful region of France.
