“Amazing, breathtaking and simply perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2008

My girlfriend and I have just returned from a relaxing week in the picturesque town of Sarlat. It was our first visit to this part of France and apart from the town being one of the most beautiful I have seen, the accommodation just blew us away, exactly how you would imagine a historic building should be, full of character and charm especially with the exposed rafters and beams.

When we arrived we were welcomed by Terri and Roy (the owners) with a few drinks in the courtyard, you couldn't wish to meet a more friendly and helpful couple. Over the entire week they made it feel like we'd never left home and their local knowledge was a great help over the week.

The suite we stayed in was the self catering De Beaumont Suite, which had stunning views, loads of room and so peaceful. Part of the fun was shopping for breakfast in the market square which made us feel like 'locals' after a couple of days. We'll definitely be going back later this year.

Even my initial reluctance to stay in the middle of Sarlat because I had read that parking could be an issue were squashed as we had no trouble during our stay.

Really recommend you try this place as its awesome.

There is very little not to like about this B&B and its British owners, Terri and Roy, who are most accomodating to their guests. First of all, the centuries old 3 room property is located in the middle of the old town and only a few minutes walk from the market. The location cannot be beat for this city. The room, albeit quite small, was spotlessly clean and its one window faced some lovely flowers in bloom. The rate was 85 euros per night without breakfast. Car parking is free on the street about 80 meters away if you are lucky to find a spot, but only 3 euros a night in the public outdoor parking area about 7-10 minute walk from the property. A minor suggestion would be for another reading lamp in the room for evening readers such as myself. There really isn't room for a chair in the room for one to sit and read and it would have been nice to have a small lounge to stretch out at the end of the day and relax. In all, we would stay here again if visiting Sarlat in the future.

This was my first stay in a B&B. WOW! It so exceeded my expectations. I felt like a princess going to my room down these turreted staircases. And the room was lovely with a huge bath I'd love to re-create at home. The hosts were ever so helpful- and since I really have no French - it was extremely comfortable to have someone offer advice on what to do, where to eat. etc. It was a very tucked away location in a charming medevial town. We enjoyed a local celebration - Ash Wednesday and felt like we stumbled back in time.

My wife and I spent two weeks in October driving the countryside of France. We found this hotel on Tripadvisor and contacted Terri directly by email. The hotel is perfect, easy to find if you have a car and centrally located.

Roy and Terri recommended great places to eat as well as out of the way locations in the Dordogne Valley to visit. They were wonderful hosts when we returned in the evening. Very interesting to talk with and loved the wine they offered.

Will definetly be back.

Look no further ...... you have found the best accommodation in the Dordogne area ...... Hosts (Roy and Terri), location, comfort, cleanliness are all second to none.

La Lanterne is in a superb situation within the medieval town of Sarlat ... no cars in the centre ... quaint cobbled streets .... gas streetlights ..... gorgeous shops and restaurants all within easy walking distance of the B&B.

The rooms are very traditionally french and very tastefully appointed ...exceptionally comfy beds and spotlessly clean throughout... the bathrooms are decorated to a very high standard and have great showers!

Roy and Terri are superb hosts and are very knowledgeable of the local area and make everyone feel so very welcome in their beautiful home. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

We intend to go back to Sarlat with some friends and would not even think of looking for anywhere else to stay and would recommend La Lanterne to anyone.

Thankyou Roy and Terri for helping to make our 25th wedding anniversary a trip to remember and we will hopefully see you very soon

Our satnav got us round the one-way system around Sarlat with no problems and would have led us to the door of La Lanterne if we had not been deterred by the very narrow gap we came to just 30 yards away (you’ll soon discover that the market trader’s transit vans go through it quite happily). So finding the B&B was quite easy, but arriving at the busy time we did, parking close to the B&B proved to be more of a matter of luck. You just have to accept that in summer sarlat is a popular place!

We really enjoyed our time in La Lanterne, Terri, her mum, Margaret and Roy, making it feel that we were staying with friends, always ready to join in a chat over a glass of wine in the courtyard or give recommendations on where to eat or what to see.

The single best thing about La Lanterne is its position, close to access from the road running around the old-town, yet just 80 metres or so from the heart of historic and picturesque Sarlat. That meant all of the restaurants and shops, were within a couple of minutes walk, so convenient to pop back and drop off those tins of fois gras, or bottles of wine you’ve just bought, or to walk back after an evening meal at a restaurant.

And the B&B seemed to naturally create a situation where guests met each other, whether at breakfast in the morning, sipping wine in the afternoon, or enjoying the quiet and cool of an evening while sitting in the courtyard. Breakfast was excellent, and beautifully presented. You won’t beat it for quality, quantity or price, at any of the restaurants or street cafes in town.

We booked the Wisteria, with it’s medieval themes, but (thankfully) very modern plumbing in the en-suite. It was clean, cool and comfortable, and being on the back of the house, nice and quiet. It’s not big, but you don’t get big rooms in medieval houses, and the queen sized bed was comfortable and allowed suitcases to go underneath.

What made La Lanterne special was its position and the friendly, homely atmosphere created by Terri, Roy and Margaret. We would definitely go back!
