“5 Nights in a Picture Perfect Padise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

If you have ever heard comment about a perfect location - then this hotel has it in spades!
Situated right on the river - the hotel is right next to the mill wheel - and opposite a tranquil park. The views and scenery from all aspects of this hotel are outstanding. Not the cheapest place to stay but absolutely ideal for any couple wishing to spend a few nights in an idyllic paradise. It is close to the centre of town (5-10 mins dependent on walking capability) and is thus very central to all of the activities that Brantome has to offer. This town has history and "old town" perspective by the cart load. An abundance of good restaurants and scenery everywhere. Right at the hotel doorstep is the river cruise, an attraction that is a must for all visitors. The staff were most helpful and breakfasts were a real delight. I will comment on the restaurant aspect of the establishment in a separate review.

We go since 12 years to this most lovely place of perigord, amazing restaurant, great history, super view to Brantome.

The last two times in this year has been terrible. Service disorientated, wine card has changed in wrong direction and too expensive, the foie gras was old and the "ceur de filet de boef" grey and a little bit hard. No discussion possible.

Two times disaster - we are waiting for the next generation - for this time, we have lost our best adresse!

Room Tip: In the main house, the rooms with the view to bridge and terrasse.

This is a beautiful hotel - the rooms are expensive but we had an amazing view of the river and the room had every luxury available - the shower was amazing although it did leak into the room at one stage! If you are looking to treat yourself - this is the place to stay - the restaurant was top notch but again very expensive - this is not a hotel to visit on a budget. Brantome is a very beautiful village and is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view

Brantome is a very pretty village and deserves it's reputation. We stayed for one night only in the main building with a lovely view over the exterior rear seating area which was decked with flowers. We received a champagne welcome cocktail on arrival served in their garden overlooking the river - great after a long journey. We did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on the food although the menu did look good. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was modern, clean and very well furnished and looked after.

Having the right room can make all the difference to a stay and to a Tripadvisor review. Having read some of the comments and criticisms about Le Moulin we phoned ahead to make sure we got a room either in the mill itself or in the 16th century extension across the bridge. The pre-planning was worthwhile. We were given a room in the main mill building (#7) that had a terrace overlooking the bridge, the mill race and the 11th century clocktower of the abbey. It was magical. Brantome rightly deserves its reputation as one of the prettiest towns in France and the view from our terrace was nothing short of picture postcard perfect.

Dining outside by the river at night is a joy. The food is excellent, and the winelist would be quite a home in a Paris 5 star hotel. For a fixed price there is a short menu giving three options for starter, entree and dessert. This option provides genuine value for money. If you are going to France this is a place you must dine . Candlelight, the floodlight abbey, the fish jumping in the river, and the quality of the food combine to make this a truly exceptional experience. Perfect wedding anniversary territory .

Slight irritations, and they are slight irritations. The receptionist demanded to see our passports on arrival, claiming this is the law. It isn't. Having to dig through bags to fish them out took some of the lustre off our welcome. At dinner a waiter brought out the wrong order, No apology . My partners warm starter left on the table to get cold while a replacement for mine was found. Irritating and a contrast with the generally warm and professional standard of service found here. Overall 9.5 / 10.

If you can't get a room in the main building ask for a room in the extension across the river. It is a two minute walk away across the bridge and along the opposite bank. Although we didn't see them ( and could therefore be wrong ) the rooms by the parking garage look to be the least attractive as they have an intrrupted view of the river.

Room Tip: Mill building itself or the annex across the river. We had room 7. Medium sized but with a view that...

What a charming little village and Le Moulin de l'Abbaye is so accessible to everything. Even though we were given a very small room, it was difficult to let that be a problem since we had a magnificent view of the river. It was compact. The shower was marvelous. The staff was hekpful, especially after I had some difficulty with the wi-fi connection. They lent me a lap top to use for the duration of my stay. Dinner in the restaurant was good and after dinner we had good conversation and wine.

I was entranced by this hotel many many years ago when I first saw the details in a hotel guide. When we tour Europe in early summer we never stay in a new hotel for more than one night. If we like it we go back, if we don't then we don't. For this I broke the rule and for the first year booked 2 nights. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we stayed three nights the next year, four nights in 2012 and are now returning for 5 nights in September 2012.

The hotel is beautifully situated on the River Dronne just below the weir, and with the wonderful backdrop of the old town, the caves and the Benedictine Abbey built by Charlemagne in 769, with the later 11th century belfry. It is a site of unbelievable charm and beauty.

We normally choose Relais and Chateaux Hotels as you know that the standard is always going to be good. This hotel does not disappoint, the rooms have been redecorated at the start of this season, the staff are mostly young (as is the manager) but all very helpful, and almost everyone speaks English.

However what makes this a great hotel is the Chef and his team. Jean Sevegnes has worked at a high level in numerous 3 Michelin star restaurants including Le Gindreau near Cahors which specialises in truffles (1 Michelin); the now closed Spoon restaurant in the 5 star Sanderson hotel in London; Restaurant Helène Darroze in Paris (1 Michelin); Alain Ducasse’s Louis XV in Monaco (3 Michelin); L’Ambroisie in Paris (3 Michelin); Chateau Les Crayères in Reims (now 2 Michelin and one of the finest gastronomic experiences in France under original creator and 3 star holder Gérard Boyer); Alain Ducasse in New York (1 Michelin).

If you want a true gastronomic experience then throw the menu away and ask that the Chef prepares you a three or four course meal. He loves to feed people who love food, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

Room Tip: Room 1 looks over the weir, and has the best view of the town. Room 4 overlooks the river and the t...
