We stayed at Le Clos des Délices for three nights during our visit to Alsace. It proved to be a very good choice.
Staff: polite and welcoming. The sommelier in the restaurant was competent.
Room: our “Romantique Luxe” room, quiet and bright, overlooked the garden and swimming-pool, it was compact, with rather modern décor - in a pleasant way -; the bathroom was impeccable; storage room was adequate. Very clean. There was a strange system where the card-key inserted in the slot lit up the whole room.
Rest of the hotel: We didn’t use any SPA services, so I can’t comment on them. The indoor swimming-pool was not huge, but well proportioned for an occasional dip. The grounds were a lot smaller than we had imagined by reading the information on the website. The trail going to Ottrott was in the thick of the wood and a bit dark, but nice anyway. The location of the hotel looks a bit out of the way, but in fact it is convenient to visit the nearby village, and Obernai and Strasbourg are not far either.
Food: we had half board for the duration of our stay. Oddly, on Sundays night the restaurant is closed, so our meal was served at midday instead. No particular problem for us, but for other guests this might have been an issue. The breakfast buffet was interesting, not huge but had everything that was needed. Food: we had half board for the duration of our stay. Oddly, on Sundays night the restaurant is closed, so our meal was served at midday instead. No particular problem for us, but for other guests this might have been an issue. The breakfast buffet was interesting, not huge but had everything that was needed. On request, eggs could be cooked. At dinner, we liked the atmosphere and lighting very much: dimmed light, but bright enough to read the menu! The quality of the food and wine was superb. Presentation equally so. Inventive dishes with the right matching of flavours. The chef is definitely an asset of this hotel! What looked like the manager of the hotel (strangely, he never introduced himself, so I’m not sure) often came over to check that everything was fine, which was nice.
We also liked the fact that we could buy some wine directly from the hotel. This is how we discovered the “Rouge d’Ottrott”, one of the few local red wines - delicious.
What could be improved: Our room was on the first floor and we had big French windows opening onto a balcony: net curtains would be very useful as people could easily look into the room from the garden and it is a pity to waste the daylight by drawing the black-out curtains. The so-called turn-down service merely consisted in, literally, turning down the bed duvet; no cleaning of the bathroom or other tidying-up or preparation for the night or chocolate on the pillow (the latter is not essential, though). A hotel of this kind should make a bit more of an effort. If the reason for this is the lack of staff, it would be better not to have this “service” at all. Another point is that whenever we came back to our room we always found the windows wide open: apart from the wind occasionally disturbing various objects, this was not good for a room with a balcony on the first floor and therefore very easy access by ill-intentioned intruders. Also, the timing for room service was not convenient, it often happened when we needed the room to get ready for the day after breakfast.
Having said all this, we found our experience very pleasant and would certainly recommend this hotel to others.More
