“Nice friendly hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2012 via mobile

Friendly family-run hotel right in the centre of Obernai. Small, free, car park 50 yards away was useful too. There is no lift in this hotel but since it's fairly compact, it wasn't too bad bringing our bags up the stairs. The room was decent -- ours overlooked the Town Hall -- and plenty spacious enough for us with our 7 month old daughter in her travel cot. The bathroom was huge, but didn't have a permanent shower fixture, just one where you have to sit down in the bath and hose yourself off. Make up your own mind whether this is a problem for you. Breakfast was ok -- not self-service, but a bowl of pastries together with juice and a tea or coffee. More croissants were available upon request, so you only had to ask for more -- not sure if other reviewers here did that. The staff were friendly and helpful and, as always, even a little bit of rudimentary French goes a long way to improving your experience! They spoke excellent English, and other languages too based on my listening to the manager chatting to guests in reception! Overall, I felt this hotel offered reasonable value for money -- it's not flash, but then charges a suitably lower room tariff than other hotels with more facilities, so I felt I got what I paid for.

First great impression was when we booked in, we were greeted by the owner of the Hotel who was very friendly. The room we were given was on the top floor and was very large with a great view. The room itself was fairly basic but was clean and comfortable for the night we were there.
As we were cycling the owner stored our bikes in their underground storeroom to keep them secure, very nice touch. If I was coming back to Obernai I would stay here without hesitation.

Room Tip: There is no lift and the stairs are narrow to the top most floors. If you have heavy luggage or have...

While the staff and owner were extremely pleasant and gracious, the room was the smallest we got in our 18 day trip through Europe. The price for the room was the same as we paid throughout Germany and Austria with spectacular views. This room barely had room for a suitcase on either side of the bed and a small walking space at the foot. Our view was across an alley to a window of the adjacent building. The mattress was hard as a rock. The food prices were incredibly high for the dinners and breakfast. For about 9 dollars, the offered a croissant, roll, coffee or juice, and cheese. We got huge spreads at other Guest Houses for less. The parking is limited and happens to be where the bums, drunks, and local riff raff hang out. No police in sight. Not pleasant if you have to go to and from your car after dark. This town closes up at 7 so you are going to be stuck in your room after that. If you want a room with some room to move about, this is not the place.

Hi have stayed at the historic Hotel La Cloche twice now and each time have found it to be excellent value with friendly staff. It is very centrally located on the main square in Obernai (opposite the much more expensive Diligence). We stayed at the very top of the hotel in a 2 level family room which had views over an almost medieval scene of crooked, red roof tops. The restaurant in the hotel is also excellent. If you are looking for a warm, friendly spot to be your base in Alsace, look no further.
