“Fair, but some shortcomings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

Spent 5 nights at this hotel and though staff was nice and the food good, I fail to see it meets with a 4 star rating.
Located by a small park and close to the city centre, this hotel seems to have defined its niche as a kind of art deco blast from the past.

Positives first:
The common areas such as reception and the bar/restaurant are quite charming, and the art deco theme is strongest here.
Though menu options are fairly limited the food quality is very good, albeit quite pricey. We spent the same amount on a 3 course dinner for 2 with only soft drinks as we normally do at the 5 star Concorde Hotel in Berlin, but here it would be accompanied by wine. That is a little disturbing for a small, provincial, French town.
In all fairness the food, which is served in a bar that also serves as a restaurant, was accompanied nicely by live music - one day by a 2 man blusey act, and another by a very skilled pianist. To us this was a plus, but should you prefer to dine in a more formal restaurant setting this is probably not for you.
A big plus is the wifi, which works well, and at a very good price 3 EUR for 24 hours, but you can connect and disconnect as needed, so the 24 hours lasted for the entire visit.

On the less positive side
While the rooms are spacious with very nice, new bathrooms, they could probably do with a carpet cleaning (hallways as well as guest rooms) and maybe even a furniture upgrade.
The rooms seems the furthest from the art deco theme.
Also there was quite a big gap between the door and the floor, so the door did not shut fully - not that it turned out to be a big issue, but I see that others have remarked the same.
Breakfast seem overly expensive both compared to the area and the selection - again this is a small hotel in a French, provencial town billing on the level of a luxury hotel in London or Berlin.
While on the subject of food, it also seems an odd idea to shut down what little restaurant services are availabe on Sunday (though that seems to be in keeping with the rest of the town).
During our stay the bar/restaurant was full of people (app. 30) having drinks and we all met each other in town trying to locate a open restaurant. Considering that the facilities are there I would have elected to offer that service to my guests.

All in all a positive experience, though I think I would go for a French country inn next time.

Stayed in a double room for one night. While arriving at the room I noticed a gap at the door. The door could easily be opened using a simple bank card. After returning to the reception to file a complaint about it, they wanted to see it for themselves and we got this reactions:''You look like you're a pro, opening a door like this''... Alltough it was easy to see that there was probably someone trying to get into the room prior to our arrival. The clerk tried it himself afterwards and was surprised it was that easy to get into a room. We were given another room whichw as exactly the same, so don't expect upgrades after they deliver a poor service. The room itself was poor, old, and can really use an upgrade for a 4 star hotel. Not 4 star worthy.

I stayed 3 nights early this month. The lobby has Art Deco furnishings In the evening, the piano was played in the piano bar. The restaurant was not open for dinner because of a special event. .My room was very comfortable and quiet.

If you lack a device to access the Internet, 15 minutes a day is provided on the desktop computer one stairway up from the lobby.

One day I had the 19.5 E breakfast in the main restaurant. In addition to the buffet, I asked for & was provided scrambled eggs. Breakfast was very nice but only the wealthy are going to spend that much daily. For the other 2 days, I purchased a box of cereal at the Carrefour supermarket which is a block away from the hotel.

The hotel has a perfect location. It is a short walk from the train station and from the main public square, Place de la Reunion. At Reunion, I visited the history museum in the old town hall. Near the hotel, at Place de la Republique, I took trams to visit the railroad museum and the automobile museums both of which are fantastic. I took a tram to Porte Jeune stop to see the medieval Bollerk tower. I took a bus to the very nice Mulhouse Zoo. I also visited the printed textile museum near the railroad museum and the wallpaper museum (a bus ride away), both of which were interesting.

We stayed here one night as a stopover on a family trip to southern France. We booked two superior rooms. When we arrived, the front desk was friendly. However, the rooms were neither superior nor up to a four star standard. Instead both rooms were small and featured dirty carpets as well as ash trays. When our children complained about the smoky smell in the room, we tried to get another room but were told the hotel was completely booked. We immediatley checked online and rooms were still available for the same night. We will not return.

All of the hotels in Basel were sold out so we landed here! It was a very easy train ride from Central Station in Basel ( skip the taxi, the train was only 7 Euros but the taxi was over 50 euros) The hotel is very tired looking except for the bathrooms. You couldn't control the climate in the rooms, it was either Arctic or Sub-saharan while I was there in early January. I didn't eat in the Hotel, but there are some nice restaurants around the corner.
Not such a great place for business, they were unwilling to loan out the iron and ironing board until 8 am ( we tried to use it the night before and was told sternly No!)

Room Tip: Make sure you can open the window, it got really hot during the night and the heat couldn't be t...

This hotel is at first look is great, good location, the lobby bar moody with live music all very nice, the 1920's grandeur is fantastic and I cannot fault the friendly and helpful staff.

BUT

Food, (we are there with five), 500 Eur. for what was basically steak and chips served in the bar, restaurant closed Monday, wine was to expensive for the quality. Two of my friends were given rugs during dinner just to stay warm. The heating issue persisted, room cold, cold everything breakfast room. It's a pity this hotel had almost all the components of being a "dream find" maybe their are trying to save costs, though the room charge was very reasonable, please put up the price 20% and buy some heating oil, (and if you show a nice restaurant on the wedsite say when its closed)
