We booked the Balanea for a 30th wedding anniversary holiday to Calvi and had understood the rooms had been renovated over the past year or so. The hotel itself is situated well in the centre of town with fabulous views over the port, mountains etc. - in September the surrounding area was quiet but I would imagine in August it could be busy and noisy as a previous poster has said.
You have to park in the port - again not a problem in September but this surely would be in August - and wheel your cases for the 4-5 minute walk to the Balanea entrance. Not a problem for us but could be for someone elderly or with pushchairs, children etc.
The welcome was good, the staff are all pleasant, and we went up to our de luxe sea facing room costing 190 euros a night room only. The lift was small and a bit dingy. The room was large with a double balcony, but the decor was a bit overpowering (orange, terracotta, grey, blue) and the room was already looking a bit tired - needs some TLC to make it de luxe again for sure - cracked floor and ceiling tiles, mould around bath and basin etc. The double balcony was great for looking out over the port but the table was dirty with the ice cream spillings from a previous guest and bird mess.
The room had not been cleaned properly, floor dirty and dusty, and there was no shower curtain although there was a pole there to take the curtain. I speak fairly fluent French and was able to communicate these problems and the next day the room was cleaned properly and a shower curtain provided. Thereafter the room was comfortable and we enjoyed our stay. I don't think our problems were an isolated case as other British guests approached us say their rooms were not very clean, no shower curtains etc.
So the position of the hotel and the views are superb but the service is a bit lacking, no laundry, no help with changing notes for the coins required for the car park for example. It could be a wonderful hotel if more effective management of the building were put into place. It may be that because of its pole position on the Quai Landry the attention to detail on other matters has slipped. I hope this is a balanced report and useful to others.
